It's hard to escape the acerbic wit of Michael Musto, whose first book "La Dolce Musto--Writings by the World's Most Outrageous Columnist" hit shelves earlier this year. Now, the Village Voice's pop culture connoisseur shares some hometown hangouts even he can't criticize.

At Home: New York City

  1. mr. BLACK

    643 Broadway, New York, NY
"This downtown lounge is sometimes a little too cozy, but it hosts a pretty stimulating bunch of nocturnal types. It's a destination for a lot of people on their nightly journeys because it's open until 6am."

  2. Hiro

    371 W 16th St, New York, NY
"The ballroom's Cuckoo Club every Sunday night is one of the few big gay dance clubs left in New York. A huge glitter ball hangs over a crowd of exuberant people and dancing go-go boys."

  3. B-Bar & Grill

    40 E 4th St, New York, NY
"The Beige party on Tuesdays is especially good in warm weather because of the bar's indoor and outdoor spaces."

  4. The Big Enchilada

    28 E 12th St, New York, NY
"For less than seven dollars you get half a BBQ chicken, salad, rice, beans and taco shells. It's an amazing meal and it's always very fresh."

  5. Ukrainian East Village Restaurant

140 2nd Ave, New York, NY
"Probably one of the cheapest places in the city to get corned beef sandwiches, pastrami and pierogies. It also has amazing Ukrainian sweets and treats."

  6. Nobu

105 Hudson St, New York, NY
"Anytime I have friends in town, this is the first place we go. I was not a fan of Japanese cuisine, but this restaurant turned me into a believer with their astounding creations."

  7. Central Park Zoo

830 5th Ave, New York, NY
"Although it does not have the Bronx Zoo's lions and tigers, there are lots of bears, monkeys and other interesting animals. The best are the red pandas, otters and mouse deer--which are neither mice nor deer."

  8. Film Forum

209 W Houston St, New York, NY
"I've seen Rosemary's Baby there like 20 times. They also have great retrospective festivals as well as new releases and documentaries."

  9. Sanrio Surprises

    233 W 42nd St, New York, NY
"This store has amazing merchandise-- Chococat is one of the best characters. It's all so creative."

  10. Strand Bookstore

    828 Broadway, New York, NY
"It's a local treasure. Not only will they buy all your used books, but you can go there to look for that missing masterpiece you've always wanted. I usually linger in the theater and film sections."

On the Road

  1. News Cafe

800 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach, FL
"The restaurant is right on Ocean Drive, so you get an amazing parade of street life passing before you. They also sell all the daily papers, so you can get the Post and catch up on Page Six."

  2. Paris Hotel

3655 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV
"Most people waste their time with the Eiffel Tower ride and the casino, but the buffet is very exquisite with many French delicacies."
