Wonderfully informal and rustic, this historic wooden lodge offers quirky charm instead of luxury.

The Scene
No-frills yet tons of fun, just as "Grandpa" Deetjen envisioned when he arrived from Norway and built the place as a "restaurant and inn for transient guests so that the public may enjoy the natural beauty, charm and scenery of Big Sur." You'll find these in abundance in 20 one-of-a-kind rooms, each named by Grandpa himself and decorated with antiques, handmade blankets and no-place-like-home TLC.
The Details
The Inn's cluster of wooden buildings have single-wall construction and are far from soundproof, so be prepared for some neighborly noise. Original hand-hewn doors have no locks or keys, but can be secured from within. Be sure to store food carefully so that thieving raccoons don't push their way in for a midnight snack.
