Don't waste your time or money

by PhillyPartaker at Citysearch

If you enjoy

1. poor service,

2. interacting with ignorant hostesses,

3. mediocre food and

4. spending lots of cash

then this is definitely the place for you.

I attended this restaurant with family for dinner. I should have noticed the early warning signs when I arrived at the place and noticed that the outside of the restaurant was warned and drab, but I thought I would give it a chance. As I entered into the restaurant, my initial impression of the place (?this place is a dive?) didn?t change. I informed the hostess that most of our party had arrived and I asked if we could be seated. She seemed as though she was annoyed by me asking her questions and I felt as though she very rudely informed me that our entire party had to be present before we could be seated, (I had nothing against their policy, but I was very offended by the attitude that she projected in her response).

Next, we were seated at our table that was too small for our party and initially it seemed as though the staff didn?t want to provide more space to our party, but eventually we were given another table. (We all thought we would have been able to eat together, but I guess they thought our party wasn?t worth the hassle.)

The highlight of the evening was our waitress. She was extremely prompt and polite. The food is just okay for the price. If you want to have a really good steak and nice atmosphere, then I would suggest Ruth Chris? in Center City.

In summary, if you are from Philly, then don?t waste the toll coming over the bridge to this place. If you do live in the area, don?t waste the gas going to this place, I would implore you to find another restaurant. There are plenty of real restaurants in downtown Center City that are so, so much better. Well, I have to go now to enjoy my Big Mac. (I guess you can tell how I like the food.)

  • Pros: Our waitress
  • Cons: Everything else

Avoid the PUB go to Manyunk for steaks.

by gunsmoke47 at Citysearch

I decided to try the Pub after not eating there for a long time. I had high expectations because I remember the PUB when I used to go back in the day. The steak was small and did not have any flavor or the blackened charcoal flavor that I remembered. The Crab Cake was ok but did not even come close to the ones you can get at Bobby Chez. The bill came to over $50.00 for two (with no liquer, coffee or desert. I was very dissapointed and will never go back again. It's really ashame that this restaurant could not buck the tide and keep the past quality and flavor of their steaks.

  • Pros: Salad bar
  • Cons: Steak was small and had no flavor, aus jus gravy lousy

hasn`t changed in over 50 yrs. a landmark

by Dee20012 at Citysearch

y grandparents dined there,my parbbbbents dined there and we go there w/my kids.the food is great !not some crap that is premade like at the steakhouse franchises..I like the fact that the decor has not changed ,I find it interesting that I can go to a place and see and feel an atmosphere that my grandparents felt..how kool is that! Its nice to take my 90 yr. old grandmother to a place and have her tell stories about when she came there w/ my grandfather .People who are not from the area have a hard time appreciating that.I actually have a menu from the 50`s a NY strip was $2.75 ...it still has the same design on it ,it is just alot smaller.when they have a full house and all the hearths are lit it truly is a awesome sight.GOD BLESS THE PUB...we love you

  • Pros: good homemade food, still looks the same

What a Dissapointment!

by rmor4sleep at Citysearch

I recently moved to the area an had been driving past this place for quite some time. From the outside, it definately strikes curiosity so i began asking around. To my suprise - it came highly rated and has a long history of being a great place for steak. We finally went this past weekend and, unfortunately, I was very disappointed.

Bottom line - way too expensive for what they offer.

As an aside, I'm completely fine with the outdated, Medevial Times-like decor. I expected something of the sort. However, what I'm not OK with is being solicited to a buy flower as they do in cheesy night clubs.

  • Pros: unique decor, service
  • Cons: food, prices

Great Overall

by timecycle at Citysearch

First of all to all the bad reviews, this is a steak house, not really a seafood house. If you want good seafood, go someplace else. The atmosphere: a lot of people say it's drab and outdated. That's what I love about this place! It's no cookie cutter Outback Steak House. It's like stepping into midieval times. The salad bar: come on, it's a salad bar, you get salad. What did you expect?

The best meal is by far the managers special prime rib. Never in a million years will you find a better prime rib. The only down side, you will get lost trying to find your back from the salad bar.

  • Pros: Best Prime Rib
  • Cons: Too Much Awesomeness to take in at once.

Disappointed

by dlltl at Citysearch

My wife and I visited The Pub for the first time with a group of about 10 couples. The atmosphere was comfortable enough. The salad bar was OK with a variety choose from. We both ordered the stuffed flounder which was dry and not tender. The twice baked potato was OK but not great. The green beans were tough. I love green beans but left most of them. I eat in restaurants four to five times a week while travelling and for the price, which is that of a much superior restaurant, the food was at best mediocre. My wife's opinion is worse than this. I wouldn't recommend this place for the food. Also, no wine list was presented and the house wine was expensive and so-so. I am used to much friendlier waiters. For $75 for two, I would pocket the money and go to Applebee's or Perkin's and get equivalent quality and probably better service.

  • Pros: Ambience
  • Cons: The food.

A unique treasure!!

by at22 at Citysearch

I really enjoyed my recent trip to the pub. I had never been there before but had always heard great things. I must say that I had one of the best steaks I have ever had in my life. They cook the steaks on big pits right out front on charcoal which really seems to add to the flavor, it simply melted in my mouth. I got with my steak charbroiled mushroom caps, which were unbelievably delicious, and some sauteed onions. The salad bar was really great as well. I'm not a big salad person, but I do love pasta salads, and potato salad, and the salad bar was loaded with those types of salad as well as your regular salad. It was a perfect meal. The decor is unusual, but really adds to the place. The staff there was extremely nice and our service was exceptional. I can't wait until I crave another steak, i know where I'm going!!!!

  • Pros: Food, staff, everything!
  • Cons: Jersey is non-smoking!!!

Great Food

by cc710 at Citysearch

Our recent visit to the Pub was great! I love the open hearth cooking. My husband was torn between the prime rib and the baby back ribs - he went with the prime rib and said it was excellent. I had the filet mignon - I love knowing that it is cooked right there on the open fire. And a huge baked potaoto. Mmmmmmmm. My mother-in-law had the Balsamic Salmon which came topped with such a delicious sauce. She let me taste some and it was sooooo good - I will be sure to order that the next time. My kids loved the chicken fingers of course. Even the kids meals had large portions. The adult meals came with the salad bar and we each had plenty to choose from since the salad bar is so huge. The zucchini bread on the salad bar was fabulous - I had to stop eating it so I would have room for my dinner! The Pub was a great place for the whole family and it was certainly a great meal at a very reasonable price. We will definately go back to the Pub - I highly recommend it!!

  • Pros: giant portions, open hearth, extensive menu

Dreadful Food, Shoddy Service, Massively Overpriced.

by lfisher17 at Citysearch

Went with a party of 10 for a celebratory dinner on a recent Thur evening. Despite being mostly empty, our sevice was spotty and the servers disappeared for long stretches of time. I had heard raves about the salad bar, but i thought it was pretty ordinary - I've seen better salad bars in chain restaurants. Our food took ages to get there, and we were not impressed, across the board. Whatever you do, don't order the seafood there! The scallops were rubbery and overcooked, while the fish was burned, then smothered in a nasty red sauce (not what was ordered) to cover up their mistake. The Pub is supposed to be known for their steaks, but the steak cuts weren't good quality, and were pretty blah. If you're paying $30 for your steak, you expect a good cut. The sides were bland: stuffed potato was flavorless and looked like it was under cooked many hours before, while the veggies were very overcooked, limp and tasteless. In this day, I can't get how you can mess up a baked potato and string beans, but they did it. All this, and then you're paying premium prices, and have to drive a ways to get there? Puh-leez. That's my 1st and Last visit. The kitschy decor was the only positive part of the night, for that they get 0.5 rating.

  • Pros: kitschy decor
  • Cons: Overpriced, really really poor food, spotty service,
