ASK FOR PRICES - They are upselling you

by gpitt at Citysearch

This was another bad experience at the Flatiron, thought I would give it another chance, but the steaks were flat and tasteless, hidden by overwhelming sauces ... and the worst part is that the owner is overbearing, and is touch with everyone, quite egotistical. Ask the prices on the specials, or be prepared to open a new credit card ... much better options, like VMertz in the market as well as M's Pub.

  • Pros: interior is nice.
  • Cons: server upsell the wine at $120 a bottle; touchy owner.

the Flatiron offers big city eclecticism tempered nicely by 'husker charm

by unclebad at Citysearch

I have eaten here three times and have had wonderful meals each time. You gotta love little places that know how to be small and relish their smallness. The Flatiron has a small menu and a small wine list, yet they pack an artistic and eclectic wallop in both that will satisfy your urban sophisticate and your country fried meat & potato folks alike.

The dining room is very pleasant, and due to the unique shape of the room, most every table is near a window looking out to the Omaha city scape. No this is not New York or Chicago, and you are reminded of that by your view. You are now in downtown Omaha -- sit back, relax and enjoy it.

The Omaha service is prompt and professional, and as you would expect here in the Midwest, very friendly, I found that the manager / host / bartender / maitre d (who appears to enjoy wearing 70's ties and sport coats) is more than happy to discuss wine pairings with your meal, just in case you are a bit blown away by the tiny, yet very ambitious wine list. He is knowledgeable without being condescending, which of course is an all too rare attribute in sommeliers!!

The execution of the kitchen has been flawless, which is always tricky with such an interesting menu. Plates are beautifully proportioned and prepared, and yet there is some food on the plate for the hungry. After all, this is in Nebraska, and in these parts, you won't get a lot of anorexic metrosexuals whose primary purpose in a restaurant is to look good next to the food. No, this is not LA. You'll get plenty to eat here at the Flatiron in Omaha.

  • Pros: sophiticated cuisine, Omaha charm
  • Cons: none
