The Very Best Italian Restaurant by Jessica C. at InsiderPages

Contributor at Insider Pages

We highly recommend Louis' Pizza. This unique restaurant has wine bottles hanging from the ceiling which add to the Italian atmosphere. Very friendly staff. There Lasagna is the Very Best in the State. The pizza's and salads are so very taste. If you are in the area do yourself a favor and stop in for a meal. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

What a surprise - Best Pizza I've Had.

by Firewall at Citysearch

I read some of the reviews of 'bad service' etc. so I was expecting rude service with an ok pizza. Nope.

The waitress greeted me within 1 minute of walking in. I placed an order to go: a small pizza.

Got home, took 3 bites and had to create an account here just to let you know it's great pizza!

I've tried pizza around the world (really) and I can not recall one that tasted in any way better than this.

If you're in the area, check it out. Not for dieters.

Easily the best pizza I've had in Michigan - sorry Pizza Papalis and the rest. Louis' is the best!

Not what it once was, but have no fear!!!!

by Tommy Donas at Citysearch

Once upon a time this was the place to go for detroit style Pizza, but no more. The service is awful. Very hit or miss. you could get served with either mediocre service, or spend hours there being totally ignored while having to send your food back at least once. How the mighty have fallen. BUT THERE IS HOPE!!!!!

Shield's pizza and Buddy's pizza both still make great pizza, and to anyone that feels like their loyaties to Louie would be comprimised by going there I say NUTS!

Louie started out at buddy's down by outer drive, then moved around the corner to shields, taking his recipe with him, before starting his own place over on van dyke.

For another great detroit style deep dish pizza, try the Green Lantern at 12 mile and JohnR

Changed for the worst

by Keflon at Citysearch

I moved to Chicago a few years ago and even though Chicago is known for their great pizza there was nothing like Louie's from Detroit! Igrew up eating there with my family. So when I came back with my wife and her family I had to bring them to this place that I had talked about for years!!! Everyone was super excited especially me!! Much to my surprise it was nothing like I remembered!! It took them ten minutes to even greet our table and another ten minutes to get our drinks. Our waitress was more interested in the table of guys in the middle of the room!! It was like she wasn't even working but that she was partying along with the loud group. The pizza came and was very dry with no sauce on it. We sent it back and no one came over to even appologize for our inconvience. About two and a half hours later we finally headed out of there very upset and I was embarrassed. I had talked this place up so much and it was nothing like I had said. To top it all off when we were leaving the lady at the front of the restaurant gave us a card and told us to vote them number one in Detroit. Maybe we will vote them the number one restaurant for a big disappointment. I think next time we will just be going to Buddy's pizza. At least I know they will be concerned with our satisfaction!

  • Pros: Salad is good
  • Cons: Horrible waitstaff

Use to be a great place for pizza

by msnbcm at Citysearch

The first time I had this pizza a few years ago I told everyone about it because it was definently the best!!! But over the last couple years I have left there very dissatissfied. The staff can be very rude and make sure you plan on being there for a while. We had to walk out before because the waitress never came back to our table. It is a quite expensive place for pizza so I would hope to be completely sattisfied. But if your not happy with the food or drinks they do not go by the rule of the customer is always right. I got wine there once and it tasted sour. I told them and the girl argued with me that other people have been drinking from it and it was just fine. Same thing happened today I called to tell them that my pizza had no sauce on it after ordering carry out (because we won't dine in there anymore!!) and he told me the guy who worked said he put sauce on all the pizzas. LOL!! The place acts like they are doing you a favor by making them their pizza. You would think during times like these where people can only eat out on the great occassion they would be more quick to make their customers happy. My family a long time returning customer will never go there again!! I'm sure in time alot of other people will feel that way. I wonder how much longer they will stay open??!!

  • Pros: Good salad
  • Cons: Gets worse and worse everytime we go there..

This place ROCKS!!!! Skip comos - head over here instead!!!!

by wittyone at Citysearch

My husband and I tried this place a few months back and we're hooked. The pizza is really good, antipasto is off the charts and even their spaghetti with meat sauce is awesome!

If you're headed here for a family party or with kids - come early - this place fills up fast - but we think it's worth it. Parking is tricky - their lot fills up quickly after 6 - 7PM.

Definitely worth the trip! Skip COMOS - head over here instead !!!!!

  • Pros: Good pizza, pasta & price
  • Cons: always busy , parking not great

Louis - KING OF PIZZA in Metro Detroit!

by DoctorDetroit at Citysearch

There's simply no comparison. Buddy's, Primo's, Shield's, Pizza Papalis - I intend no disrespect and you are all outstanding - but Louis' is the king!

This is the most perfect pizza I've ever had. Louis has taken his Buddy's recipe and improved on it, if you can believe that. One pound of cheese used on every large, so if you're dieting, good luck!

Also, if you have kids that won't eat pizza crust, they'll surely be cured of that here.

The antipasto salad is also top-notch.

For those here complaining about the service, that can happen anywhere, anytime, and should not be a reflection on the food products of the establishment. My suggestion? Just order it to go next time.

  • Pros: Pizza and antipasto salad
  • Cons: Dine-in takes awhile

Delicious!

by dUg at Citysearch

Every time I'm in Detroit, I make a point to stop in and have Louis' deep dish pizza and antipasto salad with their house dressing. Louis' pizza and antipasto is the best pizza in Detroit if not the world. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

I find it amusing to read reviews from people who are only willing to try a place once and then judge it based on one experience. I have been enjoying Louis' Pizza for 35 years. I have experienced many different wait staff throughout that time.

Like any restaurant, sometimes the staff is good, sometimes they are not - just like the customers and the tips they leave....

  • Pros: 50 years of making delicious pizza and antipasto
  • Cons: It so good that the place is usually packed.

Don't Be Fooled!!!

by jddrbjh at Citysearch

We tried this place after seeing it was the best in Detroit for so long and I have come away extremely disappointed. The service was lousy and slow. The food was a greasy mess of sliding cheese and slimy ooze and the atmosphere was not one I would have taken my kids into. The pizza was overpriced for the quality and you could have gotten better food for a cheaper price by going to your local "quick pizza" joint. Unless this is your idea of 1st Class Detroit-style pizza - stay away.

  • Pros: The Diet Coke was good.
  • Cons: Pretty much everything else.

nothing special

by cranberriesfan at Citysearch

Though our waitress was very nice, she did a poor job at the end of the evening, and we ended up leaving without our uneaten quarter pizza, because she never got around to asking us whether we wanted a box...in fact, we couldn't get her attention, she was having a grand old time laughing it up with a table in the middle of the room.

the food was average at best. the "bread basket" was very disappointing: sliced bread (tasted about as good as anything from a bag in the grocery store) that was not even warmed.

the pizza was good though, if you like deep dish and the ravioli were a bit overcooked, but the flavor was nice.

the house salad dressing was the only thing to really remark on positively.

i wouldn't go there again, despite the friendliness of the staff.

  • Pros: fun family atmosphere, friendly staff
  • Cons: bread basket andfood was generally unspectacular
