The only spot in New England where you can ski the kind of wide, tree-less bowl typical out West.

by Contributor

The Scene
Sugarloaf manages to be both extraordinarily large and extraordinarily welcoming. Its snowfields are only one reason to drive the extra hour or two to this magnificent mountain. For dining, there's something for almost every taste, except perhaps the most discriminating foodies. Sugarloaf has more than 20 restaurants and pubs. For elegance, try the Seasons, a big glass greenhouse that overlooks the mountain. For a family place, try Bag and Kettle.

The Slopes
Sugarloaf's snowfields are a joy, particularly in the spring when the savage winds of northern Maine are a bit quieter. Overall, it's a rare mountain, free of hype and full of good, honest skiing. The King Pine Bowl on the east side of the mountain is a favorite slope--great expert terrain and no crowds--just you and the mountain.

I found sugarloaf on here...looking for something fun to do for our anniversary. We went to Sugarloaf and it was so wonderful! The Sugarloaf Inn was amazing, the restraunts were great, the slopes were awsome, the recreation center was unbelivable, the ski rental staff was so great helping to find the right skiis to use, and overall the staff everywhere was amazing!! Everyone was so freindly! The skiing was great for the east coast!!( Being used to skiing in Utah and Austria...)It is a quaint and wonderful place!! You should go!!

  • Pros: everything was great, great places to eat, great skiing
  • Cons: none, none, none

A very good environment

by skibum#1

I have been skiing at Sugarloaf since I was four. I have never once had a bad experience or had poor customer service. The trails are great, they have something to offer every skill level. I also like how they keep up with the times by replacing old equipment and lifts with newer and more modern/safer designs, althought it was a sad day when I heard they had permanently decommissioned the old Gondola.

  • Pros: Great, Fun, Enjoyable
  • Cons: , N/a, N/a

Personality that blows the West Away

by skibum2002

After skiing the 'Loaf for 10 years, I moved to Colorado only to discover that none of the ski resorts even came close to the "personality" that Sugarloaf has. Many resorts out West cater to rich Texans in fur, while at Sugarloaf you will feel comfortable in a hockey jersey, camo pants, or a sweater. Sugarloaf's employees are energetic, fun, and helpful. You could meet a 70-year-old on a snowboard, a 40-something in the bar, or a teenager in the ski shop and they are all there for the same reasons...the atmosphere, the snow, and the only above treeline skiing in the East. Like the sign says when you're entering Carrabassett Valley, "From here on, your life will never be the same."

  • Pros: Good Parking, Great People, Wonderful Atmosphere
  • Cons: Chilly, Distant Location
