Johnny Depp as a distributor, Al Pachino in SCARFACE and now Denzell Washington in AMERICAN GAGSTER. Why does Holloywood keep taking the "dredges of life" and make heroes out of them. We sensationalize the use of narcotics and make the life look very glamorous and enticing. This was a well acted movie with GREAT actors. But what kind of message are we sending? Let's take a long hard look at what the "image" that we create stand for and where it takes the youth of today!

This movie was great. At first, I didn't want to see it. My son talked me into it. I'm happy I went.
Cons: Would to have liked to know what Frank Lucas does in his life these days

My boyfriend was so looking forward to this movie. At 2 hrs 40 min it was long, and it had some great scenes, however, it was as if there was too much middle and not enough end. The movie goes on and on with general life style of both main characters, which is fine but it was as if the director realized oops we've got 2 hours so far. We better rap this up. They could have done so much more with the end. It felt really unsatisfying that they took such a dramatic story and just rapped up the end in five minutes. I think because of the the length of this movie and because it didn't live up to its hype, it would best be watched on DVD. The actors did do a great acting job. This could've been a great movie, but somehow, it just missed the mark.
Pros: great cinematography, great acting
Cons: 2hr 40 min movie, abrupt ending

Based on the trailers, I was expecting a lot more bloodshed. Sure, a lot of people were offed, but not in a pyrotechnic way and there weren't a slew of innocent casualties as there so often are in many violent movies these days. Based on an article titled, "The Return of Superfly", this is a movie about, Harlem, and who's in charge. Who's in charge of the "good guys", as well, was fascinating and believable. The look and sounds of the settings were very familiar - real to life. There is some great camera work throughout the film. The dialog was not exaggerated or sloppy - no somber, dire, gratuitous stuff. The cussing fit and no one yelled except when it was necessary. I was more impressed by Russel Crowe in his role as the good guy, Richie Roberts, than I was with Denzel Washington as the bad guy, Frank Lucas. Crowe's family life made for a good subplot that gave him more depth than Washington had. The acting was good, but neither came close to Clooney's performance in Michael Clayton. They coasted a lot. I have a beef understanding how the "good guys'" put the pieces together to identify Washington as the primary villain. Another beef is the text at the end where we're told about what happened to whom afterwards. It was true, but one of them was odd. AG's detractors will say that it borrows too much from The Godfather and, maybe, from The French Connection. But who cares when you get sucked in in the first ten minutes of the movie? The Godfather was the story of a family., the Corleone's. The French Connection was about a character, Popeye Doyle. While Washington's family plays an increasingly pivotal role as the movie goes on, this was more a "period piece" than anything else. RTomatoes gives AG a 78% rating & Clayton and Eastern Promises 90% each. Clayton's acting was far better and Eastern Promises plot and cultural insight was, as well. City Search won't let me use a few harmless words to better explain some of the film
Pros: Good plot, nothing out of place
Cons: actors coasted
