Cool vibe and great fun!

My office had a function at Jake's on the suggestion of a BBQ buddy. Everything was great; food, drink, service and the cool vibe added to the great time. I will be back on my own with my husband and the office has already booked a holiday function.
Fun!!!! Great BBQ and beer.

I went this past Saturday night for the BBQ and stayed for the live blues @ 10pm and it was awesome!!!!! This is a close to the southern roadhouses that I used to frequent in the Delta several years back. Great vibe, grat food, great beer and great music. Thanks Jake!
- Pros: BBQ, blues and beers
Down-home barbecue with an impressive pedigree in upbeat surroundings.

The Scene
A steady soundtrack of blues and a dedicated clientele make this offshoot of Inman Square's popular East Coast Grill one of Waltham's liveliest spots. The convivial bar offers an impressive beer list and several unique drink creations (bourbon and homemade lemonade packs quite a punch). If you're looking for a calmer dining experience, opt for the high-ceilinged dining room, patrolled by friendly, youthful waiters.
The Food
Reluctant to leave the bar? Indulge in a lengthy selection of appetizers, including excellent fried chicken livers. The main menu features fantastic smoked brisket and chicken, and is dotted with its own eclectic starters and sides. Try the zingy cheddar-jalapeno grit cakes and excellent cinnamon-tinged sweet mashed potatoes. With hefty portions, reasonable prices and a comfortable atmosphere, this is a great spot for families, though many dishes may be too spicy for the kids. For dessert, share a slice of the rich peanut butter pie.

This is my first time writing a review, but I just feel this strong about Jake's. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is even better. Great service also. I think I know which server the last reviewer is referring to and he no longer works there. The staff is great and very knowledgable about southern bbq and hospitality. There is a celiac and kid's menu. This place is great for families large groups or dates. I highly recommend Jake's to anyone who enjoys large portions, great food and service!
BBQ is decent, service is horrendous

I was there on a Tues night in mid-August. It was not busy. It took 10 minutes for someone to seat me. My order was taken promptly and my meal was brought to me in an acceptable time. However the service went down hill from there. I went half my meal with no drink. I finally got my server's attention by walking over to the bar and asking for him to get me another beer. I finished my meal and still no beer and no sign of my waiter. When I finally received the check, the second drink I never received was on the bill. After I requested the check it too well over 10 minutes for the waiter to bring it to me. Bad service!!
I ordered the Bubba combo of Memphis ribs, pulled pork, chicken and brisket. The brisket was dry and tasteless, the chicken also lacked flavor, ribs were tasty, but dry and fatty, the pulled pork was good.
If this place was down South, it would be the joke of the town!
- Pros: Ample parking, good cask conditioned beer
- Cons: Pricey, poor service, BBQ food is dry and lacks flavor
Poor BBQ
by lesmil at Citysearch
Very disappointing if you're hankering for some tasty BBQ. I have strong Texas roots and know the difference between great, average and poor BBQ. Frankly, Jake's brisket was poor--very dry, not a hint of smoky flavor to the meat (although it had the look of smoked meat)--it was the opposite of what brisket should be. The BBQ sauces were also poor--I tried house and sweet--neither had any body nor depth of flavor. Corn bread was very dry, and had no flavor. I'm sad to say the cafeteria where I work does a much better job at BBQ. There were some good points: Our waitress was very personable, the collard greens were excellent (my favorite part of the meal), baked beans were very good (maybe because they were baked beans, not BBQ beans?), cole slaw was fresh and crispy.
- Pros: Collard greens, waitress
- Cons: BBQ
BBQulicious!

Quite simply a great meal! The BBQ was properly smoky, moist and dry rubbed! I was raised in Texas but now call Boston home and this is authentic, real deal BBQ cooked by Yankees. Who knew Bostonians could cook BBQ!?! Great beer selection, blues music and very hot BBQutie servers. This Texan has food a new regular hang!!!!!
- Pros: BBQ, grilled foods, beer selection and very tasty servers!
- Cons: Very busy and parking is a challenge.
best bbq on moody street

I ordered the "bubba" . This is a plate with samples of various BBQ. several ribs, two slices of brisket, 6 ounces of pulled pork, a chicken leg quarter, corn bread cole slaw. It's a lot to eat. I can barely eat it all. The brisket is very good, not excellent, but brisket is hard to make really moist. It's the biggest flaw that is hard to overcome. The rest is pretty much the same, very good not excellent. I am not a big fan of vinegary pulled pork. But it was cooked correctly and there were little bits of bark in it as it should be. I'm also not a big fan of BBQ chicken. I grill mine indirect at higher heat.
For my son he ordered chicken nuggets with fries. Now those nuggets rank up there with the best I've ever had. The fries were excellent too. His was served in this nice folded up race car sort of container. He loved it. This is great for kids! There is also a very nice vegetarian section. My wife loved the salad.
- Pros: parking is good, in the back! don't try to park on moody street, otherwise you'll think this is a con
- Cons: none

The Memphis Dry rub ribs were fantastic. On par with Blue Ribbon and East coast grill. The pulled pork was a bit oversauced (vinegar based sauced) but tender and still good. The chicken was suprisingly good. Juicy, with a nicely developed smoked flavor. Brisket was good.
- Pros: Fantastic Dry Rub Rib
