The Best Restaurant around

Caffe Gelato is far and above the top restaurant in Newark and the surrounding area. The restaurant offers Northern Mediterranean cuisine, with lots of pasta, seafood, and meat entrees. One previous review cited an unchanging menu as one of the cons of the restaurant, yet when I was there two nights back, our server pointed out three new appetizers, two new entrees, a new pasta dish, and the daily specials sheet, which features five distinct entrees for dinner every night. We sat in the newly-renovated side of the restaurant in one of the spacious booths on the side. The lighting is perfect, complete with candles on the wall and a romantic, intimate, but not overwhelming atmosphere. There was also a classic violinist playing while we were there. Even though the restaurant was packed with customers, the service was great, with friendly hosts, competent management, and an attentive wait staff. We never felt cramped or confined. I had the Mediterranean pasta, the creamy feta sauce was perfect and my girlfriend had the fennel salmon, which was exquisite. The owner came by our table, chatted with us for a few minutes, and even took us on a personal tour of the newly renovated part. Although the hostess offered to check our coats, I would recommend holding on to yours, as it can be a little drafty in the new part of the restaurant. Other than that, our dining experience was great and Caffe Gelato is highly recommended!

A Perfect Night at Caffe Gelato

I recently took my girlfriend to Caffe Gelato for dinner. We sat on the porch and had a great evening. I had the Veal Chop and my girlfriend had one of the pasta dishes. Both were delicious! I highly recommend the porch seating because it is a lot quieter than inside and perfect on a warm summer night.

Friendly People, Great Food, Right on Main Street!

Caffe Gelato really impressed me with their friendly staff, excellent food, cozy dining room, and overall quality. It was really cool that they make their own gelato right in the restaurant and have so many flavors! I recommend this place for any occassion.

Great atmosphere, music and food.

I've been meaning to try Caffe Gelato for a meal (I've stopped by for their wonderful gelato before) and I finally had dinner on Friday night. I was really impressed with the food, and the service and the atmosphere. What a great addition to a classy setting to have a violinist! We really enjoyed the music. It just made the evening perfect. I will definitely be back soon.

Pour accomodations

I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. I called 3 days ahead to make a reservation for a quiet/private booth. The said they would and when we arrived they sat us in the second table from the front door. It was so loud that we couldn't hear eachother from accross the table. It took me three times to ask servers or hostesses and 20 minutes to finally move us to an okay table in the back. Although it was still by the bathrooms. By this time, the mood of the evening was pretty much shot. After our move, the waiter was very pleasant and food was okay for the price. Also, the lighting was horrible, we had one candle on our table. When a elderly group sat next to us, they were complaining as well so we gave them our candle so they could actually read their menus.

I dont think we will return due to their lack of accomodation and the lack of caring that we were upset about our seating/ruined evening. Also, the food was not what we paid for. If you do want to try this resturaunt and are looking for a nice evening, make it VERY clear that you want one of the private, "half circle" booths on the side of the room.

Great Food, Friendly Service

I took my girlfriend here for our 2 year anniversary, and I was very surprised at how classy this place was. The atmosphere was very romantic...loved the candles in the walls. It looked very new, and for such a classy place it wasn't too expensive. We both got a pasta dish, and they tasted very fresh. The portions are big, but it tasted just as good the next day. The lighting could have been a little brighter, but the service was very friendly and helpful and the food was awesome, so it was the perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.

Perfect Lunch

I came here for lunch...the paninis are SO good. I was amazed at how good it was...definitely worth the price. I also got gelato at the end, and it was the best ice cream I have had in a while. It was the absolute perfect lunch and I recommend this restaurant to everyone.

Wonderful Evening

I have never been one to go onto the internet and write reviews, but I feel that Caffe Gelato needs to receive the recognition it deserves. My fiancee and I recently dined at Caffe Gelato and I have to say that it was one of the most positive experiences I've ever had. We were greeted very warmly when we entered the restaurant and were treated with nothing but respect and kindness for the whole night. Not to mention the food, which is absolutely outstanding! I am definitely recommending this restaurant to my family and friends and anyone that wishes to have an amazing meal along with a classy atmosphere. Keep up the good work!!!

Terrible customer service

We have visited Caffe Gelato twice. Our first experience was fantastic. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Our experience Saturday was less than satisfactory. While the food was still delicious the service was horrible. We were at the restaurant for 2-1/2 hours and it was just the 2 of us. While I do not enjoy being rushed I feel this was a little extensive. Our waiter was practically non-existant. We never got a bread basket even though we asked for it. We were never offered pepper for our salads though other tables around us were. The waiter never asked if we'd like a 2nd drink. When we finally got our entrees he never came back to check if everything was okay. When we told the gentleman serving water we would like to speak to the manger he sent our waiter instead. He couldn't understand why we were upset and then quickly asked if we'd like dessert. When he brought the bill we had been overcharged. I was also disappointed with the noise level in the restaurant. And, I agree with other reviewers that the pasta dishes are overpriced. I don't think I'll get my husband to go back.

Great Off Site Catering Event

My husband and I had Caffe Gelato cater our son's First Communion party at our house. They brought everything they needed, even the chef and servers! We had alot of family from out of town and they loved the food and service. The best part about it, my husband and I did not have to do any of the work and could focus on spending time with friends and family! Would highly recommend.
