Delicious!

by foodie_78

My husband and I ate at Tupelo Honey for the first time 2 weeks ago. It was a weekend morning and they were busy so we had to wait for a table. We were ushered to the back of the restaurant where there was a sitting area with complimentary coffee. Very nice! Brunch was delicious! I had an appetizer which was too big to finish. It was several slices of fried green tomatoes on top of a bed of the best cheese grits I've ever had. The dish was topped with chiffonaded fresh basil and came with a garnish of pickled okra. I also ordered the biscuits (wow!) and their homemade apple butter. The biscuits came with a tasty raspberry jam as well. My husband had a mug of homemade tomato soup that was creamy and delicious. The coffee was excellent too. Highly recommended.

  • Pros: service, food, ambience, coffee while you wait
  • Cons: none!

Excellent food

by dwe1978

We were in Asheville on a vacation but a friend who used to live there highly recommended this place. I see why. The food was so good. It was one of the best meals I had in awhile. I guess you can call this restaurant "Southern with a twist." I had shrimp in grits but it was pretty spicy. The prices are decent. The only thing is the wait. We went on a Wednesday before 6:00 and we had to sit at the counter. But it was neat being able to watch them prepare the food. I recommend this place but arrive very early if you want to avoid the wait.

  • Pros: Great food
  • Cons: Possible wait for a table

Fabulous Breakfast- come early before opening to avoid the long wait!

by yt

I've eaten breakfast/brunch here many many times and have always had a great experience. The large sweet potato pancake topped with flavored butter and toasted pecans is absolutely delicious - it's perfect in texture, moist, and sooo good. Especialy with a side of their thick cut bacon. Eggs Betty - poached eggs with hollandaise and ham on their biscuit is very rich but really good. The pimento cheese dip is a tangy, classic southern appetizer. The breakfast potatoes are crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked, but always in need of a little salt. Their biscuits are moist on the inside with a little crunch on the outside. The service is friendly and pretty good. Unless you come 15 minutes before opening on the weekend, be prepared to wait - However, they are kind enough with an indoor waiting area in the back with newspapers and i think, coffee.

  • Pros: Food
  • Cons: potential long wait

Great Food, But Expect A Wait

by shonibones

We went around 7 on a Saturday night. They have a quaint seating area in the back, and they offer drinks during the wait time. We were seated after an hour; it was worth the wait. My Italian food aficianado husband had the Penne Bolognese w/sausage, soy sausage, and free range chicken--it ranked with the best he's ever had. I had the grilled salmon with mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus (I found the fish to be a bit dry, but it was a solid, tasty meal nonetheless).

The desserts were incredible--the banana pudding was set in a pie crust and topped with whip creme. It had flavor and soul, yet it was light in feel--very good! Brownie Sundae was topped with a huge hunk of ice creme, drizzled in chocolate sauce and Tupelo Honey. Usually something like that is too rich for me, but this one was not overly saucy and sweet.

The service was very good. They apologized for our long wait and brought extra bread for our trouble. The host comes to the back seating area to cross check those who are on the list with those who are actually present. The food came out quickly after we ordered, and they made sure everything was okay once the food was received at least twice. Excellent experience.

  • Pros: Great food, solid service, southern charm
  • Cons: long wait

Sweet as honey: Creative twists on Southern dishes draw a crowd 'til the wee hours of the night.

The Scene
Comfortable, yet more sophisticated than a casual spot, this café is especially popular for Sunday brunch and late-night dining. The waiting area sits near the back of the restaurant; a long bar separates the open kitchen from the dining area and walls are decorated with photos of Asheville and its people. Servers are down-home sweet.

The Food
The menu puts a spin on traditional Southern cooking. Fried chicken is encrusted with mixed nuts, while shrimp and grits is made with goat cheese and spiced up with roasted red pepper sauce. Breakfast standbys are done right, as well. Eggs are poached to order and served over salty-perfect ham and topped with tasty, rich hollandaise sauce. Home fries are well cooked and seasoned, but are no match for creamy, buttery cheese grits. Light, flaky biscuits come topped with not-too-greasy sausage and bacon gravy. Biscuits, served on the side, are even better with a dollop of honey.

Hip Hangout

by slakker

Hidden amidst the beautiful art deco architecture that has remained in the 'American renaissance' town of Asheville,NC since the turn of the last century, Tupelo Honey's tasty menu, weekly music, and large selection of import and micro draft beers draw a hip crowd to enjoy the sounds and the scenery any night of the week.
