Louis' Lunch: Vertically cooked patties. If you want to go for the priviledge of saying "I've been there", by all means go and enjoy this unique hamburger. Yes, the burger itself is good; but unless you like your burger with very little in the way of extras and served on toast instead of a bun, there is very little else to warrant a visit. As every burger is made to order, you may have to wait much longer to receive your meal than it will take to eat it. Very few tables, so you may have to eat on the run as well. Taste is definitely superior to the place with the golden arches; but then again, almost any place that makes burgers would be. Go for the novelty of seeing your burger prepared fresh on an antique vertical cooker.

Awesome dive. The restaurant itself is tiny and eerily quiet, so I took my burger to go. I had seen a special on the Food Network about it and it totally rocked! I love the simplicity of it -- only options are cheese, tomato and onion. No condiments, but you can request mayo and salt/pepper...but no ketchup. But the burger is so tasty you don't need that stuff. Other than that they also have an awesome potato salad. The guys working are totally sweet, but be prepared to wait a while -- all burgers are made to order...they don't even pre-slice the veggies!!

The Best. This is the birthplace of the burger. They have the best burgers I've ever tasted. It's not a fancy place at all, as the building is still from the early 1900's but the burgers are second to none. As for the no ketchup rule, every ketchup eater I have taken there has told me they didn't even miss it. It is a place you must go to.
