I love this place. It doesn't serve cutting edge food; it doesn't have an interior created by the likes of Adam Tihany or other famous restaurant designers; it won't make the 10 best in the U.S. list; but the sign over the rest rooms says it all: We treat tourists like home folk. You'll be served by friendly young women, many of whom are from England or Australia, who'll not only remember you from one meal to the next but from one year to the next. If you choose to sit at one of the community tables you'll have interesting conversations with locals & visitors. Your fellow diners may include famous instrumentalists & conductors, students, people just passing through, or the group we saw today....10 over-50 members of a french bicycle club decked out in their shirts & bike tights chattering away in french.

The food ranges from extremely healthy to fat-laden, but all of it is colorful, nicely plated, & most of all, delicious. This morning at breakfast my husband had stone-cut oatmeal served with a melange of fresh fruit, accompanied by brown sugar. The serving was enormous & he wished he could've finished it but had to leave at least 1/3. I satisfied myself with just a cappuccino, saving room for lunch. A 3 mile walk followed breakfast. We'd bought a loaf of their house-baked 6 grain wheat bread (which wouldn't be finished baking until 11:30) & some of their house-baked bagels, so lunch was taken at Main Street also. It didn't make sense to go elsewhere when we had to be there to pick up the bread.

My husband had a black bean vegetable burger accompanied by roasted potatoes, salsa & guacamole. I don't care for black beans but the sample of the burger that I took was really good. I couldn't go to Main Street Bakery without ordering their curried chicken salad. It contains golden raisins, almonds, scallions, a hint of yogurt in the dressing & is just wonderful. It tops

This local bakery on Aspen's main drag serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner to an animated crowd.

In Short
Tables full of locals, business people and wandering visitors pack this place during the crunch time. Portions are small but hearty, and the selection provides for light eaters seeking coffee and a danish or hungry folk who need skiing stamina. Lunch includes thick and filling soups and fresh-tasting salads and sandwiches served on homemade bread. Almost everything is heath conscious--all-natural turkey, dolphin-free tuna, organic greens--even the burgers are lean.
