My boyfriend and I called very last minute for a reservation & as luck would have it they had just had a cancellation. It was a little more than we wanted to spend, but worth every penny! The staff, room, wine hour, pool all excellent!!!!!
- Pros: cocktail hour, beach crusiers, huge rooms
Style and Individual Service Superb!

My partner and I have stayed at the Movie Colony a couple of times now. Each time we have had friendly and attentive service. The rooms are very comfortable and decorated in fun-modern style. It is small and has very personalized service. They have a simple breakfast in the morning and cocktails at night. The vibe among the guest is very hip and fun. The pool is great and does not have hours, so you are welcome to get in the spa after a long dinner. I HIGHLY reccomend this botique hotel.
- Pros: Great Style, Inexpensive, Great Service
A retro retreat in the heart of the desert.

Groovy, baby. This '50s-style property was the first historic hotel to revive the mid-century design craze in the hipper-than-thou holiday mecca of Palm Springs. Located just below the San Jacinto Mountains, it combines the architecture of master designer Albert Frey with interiors that unite a sleek, almost Scandinavian look with retro glam accents. The 16 guestrooms are tasteful and soothing. Travertine bars, plantation shutters and private balconies or patios (in most) highlight the accessories. Additional amenities include pillow top mattresses, DVD/CD players and wireless Internet access. There are also three townhouses (the Frey, Sinatra and San Jacinto) available for rent. The pool is set amid palm trees and mountain views, and the hotel itself is just blocks from downtown Palm Springs.
What's the big deal?

I came here when it was "pre-Ballentine's"--it was run by a young German couple that had helped restore this vintage architectural gem. It was clean, well-run, offered a wonderful and healthy breakfast buffet of fresh fruits and pastries. And it was inexpensive! The place is still in the same shabby neighborhood, but the new owners have "kitched" it up and raised the costs SKY HIGH! We're merely looking at the Warhol prints and '50's furniture, not buying them!
- Pros: architect's treasure
- Cons: poor service, high cost, late check-in

I had the pleasure of staying at the Movie Colony and would highly recommend it to anyone. The owners are wonderful and friendl. The rooms are very tastefully redecorated in 50's kitsch but have all the modern amenities anyone could desire.
This has the feel of a European pensione, while having all the extras we appreciate in North America.
