Simply put, I've skied most of the top 10 listed and to be honest Mammoth is so much better than any Aspen Mt. it's not even close. Sure Ajax is longer top to bottom but there's nothing there like the top of Mammoth. Jackson is great but talk about a nightmare to get to, and if you're not a quad black dimond skier, good luck. There's no other place like Mammoth, 20 ft of snow can fall in 3 days, then you can be skiing in deep powder on blue ski days that you think someone painted. Simple drive from LA, or any place in Southern Cal and I'd drive right through Tahoe any day to get to Mammoth. The drive along 395 in either direction, from LA or Reno is unreal in beauty. Come spring time you get all the desert bloom, then unreal skiing. And the icing on the cake? The last 2 seasons I've skiied on my birthday which is the 1st day of summer, and on the 4th of July, and the conditions were amazing. Then you come off the hill and hang out at the many lakes and or boat down the road at Crowley, or just take a 2 hour drive through Tioga pass to Yosemite. So if you're looking not only for great skiing, cause the mountain will challenge every level of ability without boring you, you also get the adventure off the hill as well. No other resort offers so much to do in nature on and off the hill. If you ever get the chance, ski it in summer when you can do all the other things around the area as well, take 5 days and do something different everyday and ski each day as well. Oh, as for night life and things to do in town, it's ok, but you'll run out of things to do there in a hurry. Not a Aspen social scene, but wilderness like no other.

• Pros: A mountain for every level, snow almost year round, wonderful people, easy to get to.
• Cons: Weekend crowds, bad storms if you get caught in one. Limited night life.

With the highest elevation of any ski resort in California, Mammoth lives up to its name in a big way. The 11,053-foot elevation makes for dry snow conditions and awesome scenery, with views west toward the Yosemite high country and east out over the entire Owens Valley. It's primarily a destination for Los Angeles skiiers who can blast north up Highway 395. It's a challenging drive from Nor Cal, but the slopes are worth it.

There's a little road called Highway 88...

As a former Bay Area resident and long time Mammoth skier I take exception to the reviews contention that Mammoth is too far from the Bay Area. If you take Highway 88 instead of I-80 you can get to Mammoth in about 5 hours from most of the Bay Area. Still to long a drive you say? Well, there's a litle place called Kirkwood about halfway between the Bay Area and Mammoth that breaks up the drive quite nicely.

By the way, when the crowds are bad a Mammoth, there's a litle area called June Mountain about 20 minutes away that will still have zero lift lines. OK, you're not going to scare yourself on any 45 degree slopes at June but it has some great advanced runs served by high-speed lifts. And your Mammoth ticket is good at June.

Great Mountain - Period!

I'm from the Ice Coast and take one monumental trip out West each year and last March I fell in love with Mammoth! We got a foot of snow every day we were there (7 ft total)! I'm an easy going snowboarder but because of the powder I rode trails I would NEVER ride here. I rode chutes, rode chair 23, did the cornice thing (not gracefully - but went for seconds), trees etc... I would come back each year. There are so many lifts you can get any where. I think the longest we waited on line was 8 min. The staff was helpful with directions - they knew how to get you where you wanted to be. And the deal was sweetened with a great center of town with a great shuttle system. Experience it for yourself. Worth the trip and I'm coming from New Jersey!

Small town, Big Mountain. Talk to employees that work and live there year round.Go during the weekdays and have the place to ourself. I lived there for six years.

As a former member of a ski team I've had the opportunity to ski every major ski resort in North America. If I were to rate ski resorts based soley on terain and conditions I would have to rate Mammoth No. 1. The high elevation and abundant snowfall make for consistantly excellant conditions and a long season. With regard to the terain they have one of the most accurate rating systems. Expert is expert and advanced is advanced, not some over hyped intermediate run. Although there have been major improvements in mammoths night life and lodging, it still lags behind other major destination resorts. If skiing is your first priority then mammoth is for you.

Mammoth Rocks!

I have lived in Mammoth my entire life. I grew up there and have always had a blast skiing there. I have never had any problems with anything. The snow is always great; there's something for everybody here. Also, the town is a great place to come and visit, it's small and homey, I would recommend it to anyone. The restaurants all have great food and most of the locals are friendly if you don't mess with them. Respect the locals please! They are serving you!

Best Park in N. America

Mammoth is incredible. Super long runs, great snow, fast lifts and lift lines and an awsome park that caters to skiiers and boarders alike, Mammoth is my top choice. The nightlife used to be dim, but the new village has sparked that up. At about 4 hours driving from S.D., it's definitely worth to stay a while. Great scenery with Yosemite next door. Even on a crowded day, I have often found myself alone on a run. Plus there is always the backside to explore. Certainly a worthwhile trip to take.
