Deep Blue by Carole B. at InsiderPages

We were 7 cousins last night having dinner prior to a performance of La Traviata, featuring an 8th cousin. Deep Blue fit the bill being within walking distance of the Wilmington Opera House.

As you can see from accessing the hyperlink, Deep Blue Bar and Grill, the menu reads very well. There's a nice variety of fish/seafood & enough non-fish choices to satisfy carnivores. Presentations were just lovely, not architectural and very aesthetically pleasing. Our waiter had a sense of humor, was efficient, but even when asked the price of a special by someone, didn't see fit to quote the prices of any other specials. (That really irks me.). Ambiance left something to be desired as the rather large space is pared down to an absolute minimum. The restaurant, almost empty when we arrived at 5:30 (for a 7:30 curtain time), was full when we left & the bar area was packed.

I don't know what the others thought of their meals in toto, but my husband and I agreed that ours, while interesting looking & very pretty, left something to be desired. My grilled octopus in a basil marinade either was too salty or too seasoned or too something else, but the flavor of the grilled octopus, cut in very little pieces, didn't dominate as I felt it should. It made me long for Dmitri's back in Philadelphia. My grilled tuna was of high quality & I somewhat enjoyed it, but the stir-fried vegetables underneath (I'd asked for extra vegetables instead of the mashed potatoes), left a lot to be desired. Again, the seasoning just missed. My husband's arugula, gorgonzola, & something else salad was good but undistinguished & having tasted his striped bass over grains, I agreed it looked better than it tasted. One of our party also had this dish & to give the flip side of opinion, she enjoyed it quite a bit.

Two soups were on the menu last night: ribollita & a lobster/corn chowder. They both looked real

Food is way over priced!!!

by hungrygarcia at Citysearch

Way over priced! Food and service is avergae at best. Music, good atmosphere, and location is the best thing this restuarant has going for it.

  • Pros: Good bar and music
  • Cons: Over priced food, small portions, and average quality

The pearl of Wilmington seafood dining.

by bluehensfan at Citysearch

Trendy, upscale seafood-focused restaurant with large separate bar and private dining area. The best seafood in Wilmington. Excellent raw oyster selection, good tuna, and other fish entrees. Even steak was above average with tasty carmelized peppers and onions. Dessert menu has been kicked up a few notches and has good chocolate mousse dome and a peanut butter and chocolate mousse pie as a special the night we dined worthy of a place on the regular menu. My only qualms (and not big ones) is that many of the seafood entrees are served over a puree of vegetables that seems too similar and that risotto (while excellent) is prevalent too. $3 parking is available around the corner (and over the restaurant) or the valet will set you back $6.
