Order the steak!
by trgottschall
Don't order the brioled seafood platter - it's a STEAK place! Cook it yourself over real charcoal. If you order from the kitchen it's cooked over gas - still good but not the same. I loved this restaurant!
- Pros: Charcoal Price Steak
The Grate Steak is not always great.

Have eaten here many times over the years, including at its former location, and find I enjoy it less each time. I find cooking my own steak tedious, and having asthma, the smoke in the grill room only aggravates it. Quality of service has deteriorated over the years, on my last visit our waitress was too busy visiting with her friends at a nearby table to wait on us, we had to wait over 30 minutes after our meal just to get the check, even after asking another waitress to send ours over. The decor is also appearing aged and tired. I find the value poor, as the steaks are overpriced for "do-it-yourself" cooking. If I never eat there again, I dont believe I'll miss it.
- Pros: salad bar , lots of space, kid friendly
- Cons: aged decor, value, service
Never again

If you cook your own steak and make your own bread, why is it so expensive? I can go to Outback and get better food, service, and ambience. Best of all, if the steak isn't right I can send it back.
I made the mistake of getting a thick steak and watched those with me sitting at the table while I sweat in the grill room. I can sweat in my backyard where the beer and snacks are cheaper.
- Pros: fresh meat, free refills
- Cons: sweating, whoops I overcooked, chicken was horrible

Good concept but not very good cuts of meat. The steaks are loaded with fat. If you want to go out to eat and cook your own food, go for it. I usually go out to eat so that my meal can be prepared for me.
Steak Time

Nice cuts of Meat with a nice Salad Bar. You will leave there full and satisfied.
Have eaten there a dozen times or more and continue to go on a limited basis.
Being able to pick your steak is a nice feature.
But cooking it youself for more or same price as some upscale restaraunts just
amazes me. You don't go there for the value. I have tried letting them cook
but it returns dry and/or overcooked. (They want you to cook).
- Pros: Casual, Location (access), Plenty of Seating
- Cons: Pricey, Slow at times

I was in the Navy stationed in Norfolk in 1987. That was the year of my first encounter with this Grate restaurant. I shipped out in 1988 for the ship yards. My enlistment was up in 1989 and I moved back to Daytona Beach. Since then, I have visited that restaurant at least 4 times a year. All of my visits have been drive up, on a Friday, eat dinner Saturday and drive back Sunday. Thank you for such a GREAT place.
- Pros: Fantastic Steaks, Salad Bar, Cold Beer
- Cons: , Long Waits
Awesome

If you are looking for a place to have a great steak, this is it! Just as an FYI ... if you don't want to cook your own steak, they will cook it for you. The restaurant is very kid friendly and the food is spectacular. You can cook up your own texas toast right on the grill and have all of the salad that you want form the bar. This is an excellent place to relax and have a wonderful meal! Highly recommended!

with cooking my own steak. If i wanted to smell like smoke id go home and cook over my own grill. If i overcook the meat by accident i know i didnt spend $20.00 on the steak. Salad bar is very nice.
Stay Home and Save Money

What a joke!! While husband in Navy we lived about 2 miles from this place....it was always voted to be best in town......we could not believe you had to cook your own meal!!! If I wanted to cook I would have stayed home, bought my own steaks and saved about $25! When we asked were there any items they would cook we were handed a very limited menu by a very rude waitress then it took her over 15 minutes to come back to take our order. When order arrived the portions were small and meat was cold.....never went back!
- Pros: parking
- Cons: have to cook own food, lousy service, noisy
This do-it-yourself steak house lets you hone your grilling skills without ever having to do the dishes.

The Scene
What a concept--a restaurant that lets you cook your own food. The restaurant is large, with an open, dark wood dining room leading to a central grilling area, where you're the chef. It's a popular place, especially with military families. Long waits on weekends and military paydays are not uncommon.
The Food
Take your premium USDA choice beef to the communal grill, or trust the kitchen to cook that 22-ounce Delmonico. Either way, the huge salad and potato bar gives diners all the necessary vegetables for a balanced meal. Slow-roasted prime rib, chicken and seafood dishes round out the meaty options. The lunch menu features sandwiches, soups and the ever-popular salad bar. If you're dying to cook up a steak, choose one from the dinner menu.
