36.185593 -86.678433Greatest School in the Nation?. That's what our principle told us every morning over the P.A. system; that McGavock Comprehensive High School was better than any other school district in the states, and it's something I remember from my recent years at the school. However, upon reading reveiws of this public school, you can easily picture all this violence and and chaos, like some cliche'd movie stereotype. True, the school is very over populated, and the administrative quality is poor, but all this talk of riots and fights? I remember seeing the fights, though never a part of one myself, and hearing the stories afterwards was nothing like they had actually happened. Students would spring up to tell you about holding girlfriends at knifepont in situations where I didn't even see a woman around. I've read parent's reveiws that this school is just utter chaos and nothing is worse than McGavock Comprehensive High School. True, it has poor organization, and the school is really over populated, but I'm sure it's better than other schools out there in the world. It could use a load of work, the main of which would include diffusion of students, and also a reorganization of staff members. Yes, that's right. In my years attending the school (from 05 - 08) I found that the major problems all happen in the office. I've ran around several times from the various offices, trying to find the right one, only to be turned away because someone doesn't have the authority to do whatever it is you need done. I had numerous problems with my Tenth grade guidance counsler. She was never in her office, and always told me that she couldn't fix my grade transaction, which was her job to be doing. Highly aggrivating. To top it all off, my Senior year was a joke. The main principal is no push over, but in my eyes as to what he was doing as a job, I found that he was constantly slacking off. In my rightful opinion, he was nothing more than a bully just trying to keep everyone corralled while he goofed off like a kid himself.
McGavock Isn't What It Should Be....
This is the school that you see in movies. Racial prejudices and personal biases rule overall. As a student, I noticed that help was not readily available. Whenever a student had a problem, the principles were quicker to turn the student away than to help. The principles all play on biases. If the principles have an average caucasian child come into the office requesting anything, and I mean ANYTHING (assistance with schooling, records, and, in my case, to take needed medication, insulin for type 1 diabetes) 90% of the time the student would be turned away.
Another thing is that McGavock is way behind on schooling. I originally started school in Texas and had just finished 7th grade when I moved to Tennessee. What I found was that I was learning things in 10th grade at McGavock that I had learned in the 6th grade in Texas.
Just another student lost in the system. The McGavock shcool system is over populated with students and not enough help. The experience I had treated the child as another number lost in the system. Granted, the child had got into some trouble, I was never notified when the child was skipping. The child was moved at the end of the year and the new school still has not received any type of records. All of these records were requested on two occassion with in person visits to the school. The staff did not have enough time to even prioritize things that need to happen.
McGavock Raiders!!!. McGavock high school is the greatest school in the land. I host a variety of sports and activities. plus, the class sizes are small.
