Great school, loving environment, excellent education.
I did a lot of research about where to send my first child to school and fell in love with the faculty and staff at St. Bernards. Two-teacher teams at each grade level are well matched and break already small classes into smaller sub-groups. I fell in love with the Kindergarten teachers and the physical setup - the diverse group of children were given all the tools they needed to start their elementary school careers.
I was always struck by how confident and respectful the student ambassadors were, and have noted that public speaking and presentation even at the Kindergarten level go a long way toward making each child an active, verbal student. Academics are taken very seriously, but respect, honor, and dedicated service to others take front seats here as well.
The children have traditionally gone on to peform well in high school and college, scoring well on a national level. Art, music, foreign language, religion, athletics, and extra-curriculars make for a well-balanced educational experience.
The families here contribute to the richness of the school - you have dedicated volunteers and people who are just fun to be around. The principal and staff are there to greet the children every morning, often with a hug - all are known by name.
I can't say enough positive things about St. Bernard Academy.
Disorganized summer program ran by immature college students- parents beware!.
This was our first year at St. B's summer program and we were very disappointed. The best word to describe the program would be chaos. While older students may fare better, the younger children seem to be lost in a sea of immature counselors who don't know what they are doing. The ratio of counselor to child is much too high and most of the day seems to be spent watching tv or simply sitting.
Of the parents that I have talked to, only the ones whose children attend the St. B's Academy during the school year seem to be happy. Security during pick-up seems to also be an issue. Bottom line- while it is one of the cheapest in town, you get what you pay for!
