Good BBQ – I have grown up around Whitts BBQ's and as much as I do like TN Whitts BBQ, I prefer going where it started in Athens, Alabama for some great BBQ. It is a little drive down there but if you like Whitts you have to try it at least once. I also recommend getting the "white sauce" put on your turkey sandwich if you do go down there.
You have to understand, in the beginning I didn't. . . – I think people either love Whitt's or hate it. In the beginning I hated it, I just didn't "get it." I grew up on BBQ with a sauce. The sauce is what seemed to make or break a sandwich. So when I tried Whitt's, for the first time, I wasn't a big fan. (I'm not a big fan of their sauce). In fact I would go to other Nashville BBQ places b/c their sauce was better.
Then I started dating a guy who LOVED Whitt's and around the same time I started on the Weight Watcher system. What I came to find out is that I appreciated, and then grew to love, their Turkey sandwiches along with their coleslaw and corn bread (the new and old kind). Perhaps my pallet changed. Maybe I liked the fact that I could get a decent sandwich that TASTED AWESOME for few points and not think I was missing out. Going to Whitt's actually turned into a ritual for me after my Saturday jogging sessions.
I ended up marrying the guy who introduced me to Whitt's (for different reasons) and we ended up having Whitt's cater our wedding reception (I would recommend their catering service, easy to deal with and very flexible).
I will admit, if you go through the drive through your order will probably be wrong. Just ask them to change it and they will. The food is definitely worth the additional effort.
To wrap things up, if you are a BBQ person who "must have sauce," I understand you and Whitt's is not the place for you. However, if you are a sauce person who has an open mind, give them a try. Their pulled meat is the best around. I recommend the Turkey.
Best BBQ around ! – Whitts barbecue has the best barbecue Nashville has to offer. The service is always great, they are friendly, fast, and efficient.
For the price that you pay you can't beat them.. You can feed your whole fallily for about ten dollars.
I would strongly recomend dining I. There or taking out .. Either way your sure to be in for a treat.
Whitts BBQ is the ABSOLUTE WORST at getting your order right...HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE....ALL NASHVILLE LOCATIONS. – Whitts BBQ is the ABSOLUTE WORST fast food restaurant at getting your order right. And they have the worst customer service. I am a frequent customer of all Whitts drive-throughs and 10 out of 10 times the employee will get my order WRONG. I simply ordered a sweet tea last week and got an unsweet tea. I drove back to the restaurant to get what I ordered. This happens every single time I eat at a Whitts drive through. The employees do NOT write down the order and then they cannot remember a simple order of a sandwich, chips and drink to relay to the kitchen attendant. I order turkey - I get pork. I order extra mayo - I get extra slaw...it never fails....if I go through a WHITTS drive through I have NO DOUBT that my order will be INCORRECT. The employees are not trained in customer service. The Whitts in Ashland City should be the model for all Whitts in the Nashville area. This Whitts is well managed and they NEVER get my order wrong and the employees are courteous and helpful. I would NOT recommend eating at any of the Nashville Whitt's restaurants. I have spent lots of dollars at Whitts. But I am afraid I will have to stop patronizing this eatery. What's the use? I never get what I order? So why pay for food that I DID NOT want nor order? If they care about the future of their business they will require training for employees....the first lesson should be in learning how to write the order down. I have eaten at Whitts for 12 years and loved their food. But the last few years I've had my fill. So I will take my business elsewhere.
Very Frustrated BBQ Lover in TN
Boring and average at best – The sauce is the worst I've had in any bbq joint. The food is decent, but no better. Why eat this mediocrity when there are places in town that are truly outstanding?
All the moist meat and flavorful fixings. – In Short
Folks in Nashville know they can count on Whitt's to dole out moist and flavorful down-home-style barbecue for lunches, dinners and picnics. Whitt's specializes in Tennessee pork shoulder but does a thriving business in beef barbecue and the increasingly popular turkey. The restaurant serves all the fixings--slaw, potato salad and baked beans. Barbecue comes in sandwiches or by the plate. A family dinner satisfies groups of all sizes and dishes are available by the gallon.
Best TRUE SOUTHERN Barbeque around – There is no better sandwich in the world for this writer than a Whitt's pulled pork sandwich with salad dressing and plenty of slaw. For less sophisticated palets, I guess all of that thick red sauce is o.k., but give me the pure unadulterated meat with vinegar sauce. My ALLTIME favorite barbecue !
It's all about the Pork – I've been eating Whitt's BBQ for over 40 years. When I was a kid, there was only one Whitt's BBQ in the world -- a drive-thru on Elm Street in Athens, Alabama where I lived. I have since lived in many different cities, and all over the south. Not only is there absolutely no BBQ as good as Whitt's, but I have also found that a purely vinegar-based sauce is nearly impossible to find. It's hard to tell what you're eating if it's smothered in ketchup, there could be almost anything under there. The Whitt family's closely guarded recipe gives the perfect compliment of flavors to their hickory smoked pork, and a succulence not found in any other BBQ. Their pulled pork is unrivaled for flavor and texture.
So go ahead, get you some mystery meat smothered in ketchup. Or, discover the real flavor of southern smoked barbeque at Whitt's.
It ain't Texas and it ain't supposed to be! – This is not tomato-based, "Texas" style BBQ (with that heavy of a sauce you could make shoe leather edible). It's better. With Whitt's tangy, light vinegar-based sauce, the meat's hickory smoked flavor is the focus. I have lived in multiple major cities and they all have their highly regarded BBQ joints - none of them even compare to Whitt's. Every time I fly anywhere that I can get at least a stop-over in Nashville, I get several pounds of Whitt's BBQ and as much sauce as I think I can stuff in my intentionally-lightly-packed carry-on. What made me find this site is that it's my birthday and I want some shipped to me so I did a search. Then I saw a review that didn't sit right with me and decided to add my own. If I had the money, I'd open a Whitt's in Seattle!
How did this make the list? – Whitt's is a BBQ atrocity - I'm quite shocked that it even made the list here. Okay, atrocity may be a bit of an exaggeration, but the meat is sub-par, and the sauce is little more than peppered vinegar. I was very disappointed when I ate there; perhaps my tastebuds are honed for other types of BBQ sauces, but for me Whitt's was not a good experience.
