Check your self esteem at the door. A friend invited me on a guest pass to this dance club. After her first class, she bought an introductory package and loved it, so I decided to purchase also. It was fun, right up until the sales tactics. After my first lesson, I was sat down and told what a natural I am, how much faster than most people I was learning, how much better about myself I
It's a Great Day (and Place) to Dance.
I have been at NDC Belle Meade since January 2010 and love every minute of it. I have always wanted to learn to dance, and NDC is helping me realize my dream. I have danced at a couple of non-NDC studios in town, and they have their merits, but for me, NDC Belle Meade is the best fit.
At NDC, during the warm-up before each lesson, students dance with several of the instructors, an opportunity which has increased my comfort level in dancing with different partners, not to mention changing partners mid-song. There is a “family” atmosphere at NDC that I did not find at the other studios. I broke my foot in July and had to be out for eight weeks. My instructor touched base with me several times during that period. In addition, I got two personalized “thinking of you” cards signed by all the instructors, and welcome-back hugs all around when I was able to return. At NDC, you are a studio client, and everyone is there to help you learn as much as you can. [At one studio where I previously took private lessons, there was a distinct air of competition between the (independent contractor) instructors for private-lesson students, which resulted in an uncomfortable hands-off atmosphere toward those students]. There is a great deal of flexibility in scheduling lessons, private and group, and if private lessons aren’t your thing, there are group lessons most nights of the week. and parties on Friday and Saturday. I appreciate the attitude of “if you can learn it, we’ll teach it to you.” I also appreciate the opportunity to work with visiting world class experts. I like having a plan for what we are going to work on and the ability to track my progress. Being able to see how far I’ve come is the pick-me-up I need on days I feel born with not two, but three, left feet. With my previous, non-NDC, private-lesson instructor, we just worked on whatever he felt like doing that day, with little continuity or reinforcement of previous “lessons”.
I have read some of the posted negative reviews, but neither validate nor dispute the described experiences. I can say that my experience has been completely different. I have neither seen nor heard of any of the instructors drinking during any of the parties and no drug use by anyone. It is true that students are made aware of frequent opportunities to compete, participate in showcases and/or travel with the group, and, like all sales people, those responsible for presenting such opportunities are persistent. However, I have to say ‘no’ far more often than I can say ‘yes’, and I’ve yet to be shown the door for invoking my right to do so. Dancing is an expensive hobby, no doubt. But I have learned that in dancing, as in life, you get what you pay for. I am investing in me, and I’m worth it. Come down and try it out … it’s a great day to dance!
NDC Belle Meade.
There's a reason we've been at NDC Belle Meade for a number of years...it has been a great experience. And it is an experience we intend to continue. It is an investment, but an investment we are so thankful to have made. I have friends who dance at other dance clubs, and they tell me they enjoy those, but for our money NDC Belle Meade is the place.
I can only speak for NDC Belle Meade, but lessons, parties, everything are handled quite professionally. While there are those who are more involved, everyone seems to be treated equally. I have taken lessons from many of the instructors, and they all have taken my time and investment seriously.
When I read the reviews about teachers drinking and such, I knew the reviewer was NOT talking about NDC Belle Meade. In our years at Belle Meade we've never observed questionable behavior in the instructors. I am confident that an instructor who might attempt that type of behavior wouldn't be allowed to stay.
The path that led us to NDC Belle Meade, and the path we have experienced thus far, has been a wonderful one. I would wish this wonderful experience for everyone.
Dance while you can !
Make Sure It's the RIGHT National Dance Clubs!.
Just wanted to send out a friendly reminder that there are 3 National Dance Clubs Locations in the Middle Tennessee area. Please make sure if you are writing a review, that you write a review for the appropriate location.
While all 3 clubs are affiliated and teach on the same principals, all of the clubs are owned individually, and are different from each other in their own right.
There are several posts on this page that are not referring to the Belle Meade/West Nashville location.
We would love for everyone to come on in and try us out for themselves. You are never charged for a lesson you are unhappy with, and your only regret will be that you didn't come in sooner!
We look forward to seeing you. :-)
Its a club with no dancing!. This place is great if your looking for a members only kind of place to go and have a good time. If you want to learn how to dance then take my advice and go elsewhere!!! Once upon a time I took a couple of lessons at the Brentwood location. Then a friend of mine got me to go to Dance World. This is when my eyes were opened! At DW, the lessons are affordable(half the price actually) and you are actually taught how to dance by real professional dancers. At this place you cant even tell who the teachers are! On top of that they are home to several high level competing couples. So, being curious I went back to NDC for another lesson and at the end of the lesson the teacher sat me down at a table and tried to get me to sign up for more lessons-then I asked to see his accreditations-of course none were provided. Save yuorself the trouble and go to Dance World!
IF YOUR NOT RICH STAY AWAY!!. I was invited to NDC as a guest over a year ago. At first everything was wonderful then, as soon as I slowed down on the number of lessons I took a week and didn't do the shows any longer because of the expense (once you get past your first set of lessons which is only a couple of hundred they run over $10,000 for a book of about 100 lessons!!), everything changed!! They no longer danced with me on Friday nights unless it was a slow night, I was the last one called to book in lessons then was frequently bumped for other students who were doing more than I was and was told I would lose what I had learned (muscle memory) if I did not continue at the same pace I had been previously. All in all it ended up making me feel horrible and that I had simply thrown my money away! I also agree with the other comments here about the alcohol and drug abuse. I saw it as well especially at the Friday parties. My instructor would drink before the parties and you could smell it on him!! I'm glad I learned to dance but am happy I left before they got my life savings!!
Learn to Dance-Have a wonderful time.
So grateful that someone invited me to National Dance Club. I had taken a few lessons before coming to NDC and frankly never thought I could be a good dancer. After my first guest night I was convinced I could. Everyone is so encouraging and positive. All my life I had wanted to do this, and now my dream is becoming a reality.
When people talk about the cost they never discuss the value. Frankly what they have given me is priceless. Many people have dreams that are never fulfilled. My friends can see what a difference dancing has made in my life.l I started in Aug. 2009 and danced my way through the most stressful 6 months of my life. My health has improved and my weight has decreased. And the smile I have is real...I look forward to every trip to the club. You are greated with a smile and a hug and then get to dance on top of it..I think every day is a great day for dancing.
There are people of all ages here and we all encourage one another. They are experts in their field and this is just the place for me and my friends.
Having a ball and loving it!. Six months ago I signed up for my first lesson in Belle Meade and showed up with a 'deer in the headlight' look. I think back and chuckle, wondering how could I have been so nervous?! The team at NDC makes learning to dance fun, so much that I consider classes/lessons my guaranteed 'happy time' every week. I look forward to those days or evenings and find myself anticipating what new step or dance I'll be introduced to next. The camaraderie between students and instructors is comfortable and easy going and the new friendships I'm making, well, they're priceless! They offer a variety of events and the Friday night parties are a ball! Please give NDC a try; don't hesitate. My experience is helping me become a healthier person (both inside and out), and it continues to bring joy to my life. I'm learning, I'm dancing and I am happy!
Brought Out My Confidence!. I first went to NDC filled fear and anxiety, but the minute I walked in, the receptionists and everyone I came in contact with made me feel at home and welcome. My instructor was professional and patient with me every step of the way. I have now been here for a little over 6 months and LOVE IT!!!! I am so comfortable now and am way more outgoing than I have ever been! This place has changed my life for the better!
High Quality Service.
I had gone to some other dance studios in another state before I moved to Nashville. I found the service severely lacking in those schools, so I was reserved when coming to National Dance Clubs. I had also heard about the high pressure-sales and the expense, but I really wanted to learn at a good school and was ready to pay for it if it was to be had. I am a teacher myself, and so I know a thing or two about teaching.
National Dance Clubs was the most friendly school I had been to...(I had tried 2 other schools). When I came to a party, everyone knew me...and if they didn't, I was introduced by the teachers. I always felt very welcome, which I definitely did not at other schools.
I never had a problem with the so-called high pressure. The first time I went, I left my purse in the car--but I went out and got it because I was so impressed with the quality of the service and the knowldgeability of my teacher. Yes, they did tell me about some things I could not do or did not really want to do because I could not afford it, and yes, they did ask more than once, but I am a big girl, and if I do not or cannot do it, I smile and say no thank you...once, twice, three times. Frankly, I would be a little insulted if they decided for me what they thought I could or could not afford and did not make me aware of opportunities they were offering to other people. They were never cold or mean...ever.
I have worked it out and the private lessons do run about $100/private hour. By today's standards, that is NOT expensive for private instruction. In fact my daughter's gymnastic coachings are just about as much, and this is for both me and my husband...who, by the way, has paid more for private golf lessons. I certainly think there is a LOT of value in the price, because not only do we get superlative instruction, but we feel part of the studio through their many events and parties.
Be wary of places that say they only charge $50 or $60 dollars per lesson. They do not tell you about the floor rental you have to pay to use the floor. Also, I have heard that because these are floor rental studios and do not employ their teachers, you are actually subcontracting help and may technically be responsible for the taxes. That was something I just did not want to even worry about!
Also, at pay-by-the-lesson studios, there is usually not an over-arching goal planned or lesson plan, which, as a teacher I value very much. I know exactly what I can expect to learn with a block of lessons. I know people who have had to stop lessons because of circumstance and were afraid that they had lost their money because of what they had heard from people who had never been at NDC, but the supervisors were very understanding and offered a payment plan, to put their lessons on hold, or a refund.
I just wanted to put my 2 cents in because I saw those harsh reviews--some from people who had never been there.
You get what you pay for. If you want to be treated like a valued customer with a lot of potential as a dancer, given lots of opportunity to really enjoy what you have learned, and get to meet a lot of really wonderful, positive, and supportive people, both teachers, supervision and staff, and certianly not least, the students, try out the National Dance Clubs. I go to the Brentwood location.
