I understand. . ..
I understand all the reviews where people give Whitt's a bad wrap. This is not the same ole same ole BBQ. Now I haven't been to Texas or Memphis to have the best of the best. I'm not a smoker nor do I know how to make BBQ, I'm just a plain ole Nashvegas Resident who loves Whitts.
For me their Turkey sandwich, hold the mayo but keep the slaw, is the best. There is no need for sauce. So skip it. This tender and tasty sandwich is my favorite after a long run. I'm also a big fan of their corn bread (the new kind and old kind).
My only compliant is that when Iorder something specific (like a turkey sandwich hold the mayo keep the slaw) I have to tell them twice and double check it. On average 7 out of 10 times the sandwich makers give me lettuce on the turkey since I ordered it with no mayo.
My HUGE compliment to Whitts goes out to their healthy standards. I love that they put the nutrition their website including Weight Watcher points. This way since I need to track what I eat, this makes my life easier and I'm glad they support that.
All the moist meat and flavorful fixings..
In Short
Folks in Nashville know they can count on Whitt's to dole out moist and flavorful down-home-style barbecue for lunches, dinners and picnics. Whitt's specializes in Tennessee pork shoulder but does a thriving business in beef barbecue and the increasingly popular turkey. The restaurant serves all the fixings--slaw, potato salad and baked beans. Barbecue comes in sandwiches or by the plate. A family dinner satisfies groups of all sizes and dishes are available by the gallon.
Great Q, but fire the mean lady up front.
I have tried this particular location several times, and I must say, the Q is pretty dang good. However, the people working there are some of the rudest people I have ever met. In particular, there is one female who acts like she is watching the door at an exclusive nightclub in LA, and i'm not on the guest list. Come on folks, it's BBQ!
Anyway, her poor attitude is constant and is definitely a detterent when I drive past that place hungry for some Q.
I hate to be picky, but these people need to learn that the experience counts as much as the food.
Run her out and i'll be back.
Not good Que.
I have visited the big smoke pits of Texas, I have been to the BBQ shacks out in the backroads around Memphis. I have had BBQ in all of the corners of Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.
This some of the most disappointing BBQ I have ever had. The worst I have had is at this shanty in Chattanooga, TN called Choo Choo BBQ don't go there) Whitt's is next to the worst.
Not Even Fit for Airport Food. Not only is this the worst barbecue I have ever had. It is not even a worthy contender at the airport where desperation and hope are your only companions when your flight is delayed and hungery.
can't leave home without it!!. I have LOVED Whitt's Barbecue for years and think it's the best Nashville has to offer. I have lived in Kansas City the last 4 years and return to Nashville quite frequently. One of the highlights of my visit home is eating at Whitt's several times. It is something that is planned into my schedule! The best thing about returning to Kansas City is that I always eat a Whitt's barbecue sandwich at the airport before I leave Nashville, and I usually pick up 2 lbs. of frozen barbecue to take back with me! My friends in Kansas City think I'm a spokesperson for Whitt's.
No smoke and it's not barbeque. I don't get it. Whitt's must smoke their meat for about an hour and the meat does not have the characteristic pink flavor the smoking imparts. I know it's all a matter of taste but if it's not smoked for several hours over wood, IT AIN'T BBQ!!!!! THis version of meat is either steamed or baked for a long time but it still isn't good quality barbeque. If you want true BBQ try Neeley's. There may be some other good BBQ joints around town but Whitt's isn't among them. Go to Memphis for some truely good smoked meat. The only smokin' in Nashville seems to be the cigarette smokers who have been firing up their butts since they left the birth canal.
Illegal Barbecue TraffiKing. Whitt's barbecue is the best smelling, tasting, and looking barbecue. There is a Whitt's located next to my aunt's shop in Dixon, TN. Since we are from Tennessee but live in Florida Whitt's is a favorite delicacey for my Floridian Family. When visiting TN. Whitt's is a must stop barbecue pit when we cross the state lines and when we head back home. For you see my father has got to have at least 5 pounds of Whitt's tender shredded meat for the trip home. Illegal Barbecue Trafficing, maybe?
STAY AWAY. I don't know if Whitt's even classifies as BBQ. It's basically just oven roasted pork with AWFUL sauce. The ribs are terrible, too. I don't know who keeps voting this the best in Nashville.
Whitt's is the WORST BBQ.
It always aggrieves when Whitt's is voted "best BBQ in Nashville" in the Nashville Scene. What's worse is the fact that Whitt's continually crows about this dubious honor. I've had the opportunity to travel throughout the Southeast and Midwest, and I've become quite a fan of good BBQ - especially BBQ pork (sorry Texas). That being said, I've come to the following conclusion:
Whitt's is crappy BBQ. Not only is the meat dry and mealy, the sauces are sub par as well. Only in a town as devoid of good BBQ joints could a restaurant like Whitt's be rated #1. Indeed, Whitt's is to BBQ what McDonald's is to hamburgers: It's cheap and will fill you up in a pinch; however, it's not what any discerning soul would call top-notch cuisine.
