Casanova proclaims itself "Carmel's Most Romantic Restaurant," and after you've been led through the exquisite French cottage-esque interior out onto the ridiculously charming heated & covered stone patio, you'll be inclined to agree, even before you've had a gander at the 30,000 bottle strong wine list. Come dessert, don't pass up the lemon souffle tart!
Casanova Restaurant Carmel – Very disappointing. Service was terrible, not the fault of the waiter but the manager/sommelier who assigned one server too many tables. Waited 20 minutes for a half bottle of wine (overpriced). Given a prix fixe menu & wine list without being told that there was an open menu & wines by the glass. We made a reservation two weeks ahead which we informed the hostess about. Local motel owneer told us the service was poor but we went with the recommendaatiion from a friend. On a five day try trip this was the worst dinner we experienced & we ate in some very reputable restaurants. We found our expensive prix fixe dinner to be very rich and disappointing.
Call the Health Dept. and don't eat there!! – I visited Casanova's after hearing they had pretty good italian food. The night started out well...the hosts were friendly and the waiter seemed friendly. After drinking 1/2 my water I suddenly noticed particles floating in the glass. Not just particles, but food. And not just food, but someone else's food! I could see green stuff and ham in my water glass. Disgusting! We hadn't gotten our food yet so I knew I was given a dirty glass that they had dumped trash into. I immediately felt nauseous. I told our waiter when he came by that, "eww gross, i can't believe I drank out of that without noticing, ha ha". Tried to be polite....He didn't even apoligize. Took the glass and took a while to bring me a new one. Again, I tried to be nice and said thanks, but isn't that gross? Nothing. Not a word. Not an apology. I would first expect an apology then perhaps some kind of discount. someone could get really sick. I should have called the health dept. I didn't. Instead I wrote an email directly to the restaurant in which I mentioned who the server was and exactly what happened. Now, over 2 months later....nothing! Again, no apology for what is a pretty serious matter in the resetaurant industry. Thoroughly disguested - DON'T GO THERE!
Great Food Bad Service – I must say the food once cooked right was excellent. I ordered the Filet and I asked it to be Medium Rare and it was rare, My wife ordered Lamp and she got Scampi. We ordered the Coconut Ice Cream for my daughter and we got Mint Ice Cream and the guy who servered us didn't care so we only left less than 10% tip. Very poor service but the food is great.
Casanovas... a time come and gone. – It's been a few years since I've been back to Casanova's. It still has great food but I was disappointed on this visit. Despite the mixed reviews, it is overly pretentious. Perhaps success has a way of spoiling what was once a value. The prices are overly inflated and sadly, the staff is complacent and a little arrogant. There are much better value to be found in Carmel. Without a correction, the time of Casanova's may have simply come and gone.
Take this one off your list – The waiter did not inform us that there were changes on the menu to the dishes that we order; the meals just arrived with different offerings than we listed. They also left a item off of one of the plates and when told about this the waiter made no attempt to correct the error, he simply told us that we were incorrect about the menu. Also, the service was very slow and the tables were placed to close together making the dining experience with our loud neighbors less than pleasurable. The food was good but not worth the price. The Rio Grill on Rio Road is an excellent alternative and worth the very short drive out of town. The food and service were outstanding.
Overrated – This restaurant has an awful atmosphere, you expect to have a nice quiet meal if you pay 50 bucks for each item. The environment is ridiculously tacky as well they have rainbow christmas tree lights lining the cieling. If you want a nice romantic dinner out go to Da Giovannis, Cassanovas is overpriced for the money, loud, and just not worh it.
Good Food and Unique Environment – This is one of those places that has a unique charm that you will like or be overwhelmed by. If the service seems snooty, remember this is an Italian restaurant true to it's form. The culture begs for interaction. The restaurant and it service is made for the zest of life.
The wine list is impressive, and if you have the money, the Somellier if a fun way to buy wine, otherwise just give them a dollar amount and wine style and they'll help you out. I have never found them to be arrogant as much as not clear on what somebody wants. I can see why people misinterpret this restaurant but it is definitely a one of a kind restaurant you should experience.
Wonderful Spot – Don't be discouraged by the negative reviews about the service. I can't believe they were in the same restaurant. We had lunch there, and everything was excellent! Our server was attentive, and friendly, and the food was delicious. Probably one of the most romantic places in Carmel too. Definitely go!
Inexcusably Bad Service – I ate here with my family a few months ago; it was literally the worst dining experience of any of our lives. To summarize: The staff was rude and extremely overbearing. We were crammed into a corner in a basement patio. We could barely hear each other because of an exceedingly loud table nearby. We will certainly never return.
There are plenty of good places to eat in this town that have never made anyone as miserable as Casanova made us. Go to one of them instead.
Good food, terrible service – This restaurant only has set dinners starting at around $40 per person (excluding wine). The food was good (we had the Paella), but the service was one of the worst I've experienced in a fine dining establishment. The snooty sommelier was already mentioned in some other reviews, but the waitress we had gave us so much attitude that it ruined the entire dinner I had with my girlfriend. Given that there are so many other nice places to eat in Carmel (with better service), I would not go back to this place again.
