Editorial Review for Nobu – by Citysearch Staff

The Scene
Thanks in part to the fact that Nobu belongs to the Drew Nieporent-Robert De Niro restaurant syndicate, this vaunted sushi house has become a little Hollywood East. There's a palpable anticipation of celebrity sightings from a crowd that's equal parts nouveau riche and seasoned, in-the-know foodie. The sleek, Japanese-accented interior--by star restaurant designer David Rockwell--is an impressively calming space.

The Food
The densely flavored sweet black cod marinated in miso is Nobu's signature item. Another jaw-droppingly good choice is the squid "pasta"--tender pieces of squid and crunchy asparagus, coated with a rich butter and garlic sauce. As one would expect, the sushi and sashimi are decadent. Omakase dinners here are legendary, and easily eclipse Alain Ducasse in price.

Simply outstanding! The best sushi I've ever had. I am not the most adventurous sushi eater. I'm a California roll and eel man. I like hamachi, maguro and some of the more common sushis but I don't love them. However, at Nobu, I was converted. Almost a religious experience onto itself. I had the chef's tasting menu which had a lot of fish I normally wouldn't try but I went for it. WOW!! The flavors were subtle, crisp and very clean. Extremely creative in presentation and taste. I paired my dinner with a bottleof Veuve Clicquot, which seemed to really bring out the sweet and salty flavors. Service was excellent considering I didn't have reservations on a Saturday night, they were very accomodating as the place was packed. This was a very pleasant evening and I highly recommend a visit. It's not cheap but well worth it. Dining at Nobu is one of those things you have to do before you die.

Pros: sushi, ambience, service

Cons: none

I went out to see what the hype about Nobu was. Everyone said it was the best sushi. So what started out as a night of excitement turned out into one of the worst nights dining out ever. I love sushi. I love to eat great japanese food and nobu had its hype. But starting from the reservation to paying the check the waitress and hostess were both rude. They had this snobby attitude that it was a please just to be able to get in and eat at their restaurant. I work at a restaurant myself and that isn't how a customer should be treated. Well besides that the food was at most okay. The portions are SMALL but that is to be expected from a japanese cuisine. The sashimi was at least fresh. But there was just something off about it. The food quality was so bland. Nothing exciting for a fusion restaurant. The black cod was good i gotta say, kinda sweet but good. The gingerbread dessert was dry. I thought it was old or something. Not enjoyable at all. I wouldn't recommend nobu to anyone. There are better places to spend your money.

Pros: None

Cons: Bad service, bad food, too expensive
