Worst Valentine's Day of My Life!! – I had the most unbelievable Valentine’s Day ever! A friend made reservations for us at Pup’s Steakhouse. Oh the Valentine’s dream, dinner at 8:15pm and all will be wonderful. My hubby should have never noted earlier the day before that we were going to have issues with timing and problems with reservations.
We arrive at Pup’s at 7:50. We are greeted at the bar and place our orders and advise the bartender of our reservations. I’m thinking all is good because he confirms 8:15 pm reservations. The evening proceeds and at 9:25 pm we still have not been seated. Problems arise when my friend invites the owner to explain why we are still having issues with an 8:15 p.m. reservation that still can not be accommodated. Upon the owner explaining he has had 18 years experience in the restaurant business and that it is out of his control that patrons stay longer than the time he had anticipated for his reservation scheduling. I ask him why he scheduled 15 minute increments for his Valentine’s Day evening reservations to which he responded very defensively and proceeded to ask me how I would run his business. Since he has repeatedly advised of us of his 18 years restaurant management experience, I’m rather offended by how defensive he has become so quickly. Also, because I have the philosophy that if I am paying for service, and if I have made reservations for an expected level of service, I would not expect the staff to question me, and even more, the owner to question me. . . but instead I expect to be treated with respect as a customer. I have always been taught that the customer is always right and pretty much told him that was how I thought it should be. . . oh, but wait -- with 18 years of experience, he must know much more about customer service and how to run a business, perhaps I was out of line for expressing my dismay at him asking me how to run his business.
The next few minutes are what amaze me the most! My husband, in responding to the owner and in questioning his management experience, the owner, Mr. Michael Dunn, became completely irrational. My husband made a comment about Mr. Dunn’s parents should have taught him better (referring to him becoming irrational). . . to me a fairly innocent colloquial statement. . . surprising to all privy to the conversation, Mr. Dunn almost came across the bar at my husband. He irrationally took everything my husband said as disrespecting Mr. Dunn’s parents and Mr. Dunn kept irrationally repeating that Mr. Dunn’s father had 8 months to live and his just went ballistic – he told us to get the f**k out of his restaurant and screamed this over and over. I was personally concerned with safety so had dialed into 911 and was ready to press “dial” should Mr. Dunn continue so irrationally. In retrospect, I should have been videoing the entire episode because it is still so surreal. I still have no idea why Mr. Dunn reacted as he did or what triggered him. Mr. Dunn’s family and my husband’s family were acquaintances and I knew my husband thinks a lot of Mr. Dunn’s mother and father, so I was completely taken aback by and was absolutely astonished at Mr. Dunn’s reaction and response. All I can say is I should have listened to my original inclinations to never patronize his restaurant. I had heard many negative rumors about Mr. Dunn, and after experiencing his completely irrational behavior this evening, I can say I’m completely amazed that he has been as successful as he has been in his entrepreneurial adventure. Dare say I will ever step foot into any proprietorship he ever has anything to do with again. …And I’m still trying to figure out how “your parents should have taught you better” was so disrespectful to Mr. Dunn’s father and mother . . .
