Opened in 1977, this state-owned farmers market offers bargains on fresh-from-the-farm food in a decidedly down-to-earth atmosphere. Business owners stock up on bulk wholesale goods; tourists and locals, who don't need two bushels of potatoes when a few will do just fine, pick and choose from heaping barrels.

The Experience
A restaurant on the premises serves sandwiches, ice cream and other treats. However, the quality and selection of produce makes this a prime shopping spot for picnic fixings. In the two enclosed retail buildings, shoppers find bright, plump tomatoes, huge cucumbers, sweet berries, crisp apples and barrels of other in-season fruits and veggies. Vendors sell crafts and jars upon jars of locally canned jams, sauces, honey and sweets. Some meat and dairy products are available, including an unusual must-buy: salty, squeaky cheese curds, available by the pound. Flowers, shrubs, trees and supplies are sold at the on-site garden center.
