Overview – Once owned by George Vanderbilt, this historical house boasts 250 rooms stretching up three stories. Highlights include artwork by Renoir, furniture by Chippendale, a library with 24,000 books and a chess set that belonged to Napoleon. Close your eyes and you can envision Henry James or Edith Wharton dining in the expansive breakfast room. Also on the 8,000-acre estate: spectacular gardens, an expansive winery, multiple restaurants and opportunities for hiking, biking and horseback riding. – – The Experience – There's much to explore--easily a full-day…
Editor's Tips
- When to Go:
- Avoid visiting over holidays and weekends; crowds pour through the house, making it difficult to travel at your own pace.
- Know Before You Go:
- Attractions are spaced far apart and transportation isn't available, so plan on driving to different areas on the estate.
- Save Money:
- Visit after 3pm and you'll get in free the following day. Just have your ticket validated before you leave.
- Know Before You Go:
- The luxurious Inn at the Biltmore is the only lodging available on the estate.

Prior to visiting, I never thought I'd say any house was worth a $45 admission, but this one definitely is. I wish I'd had more than a couple of hours to visit. I highly recommend.
- Pros: Nothing else compares
- Cons: Plan on at least a couple of hours for the tour
