The Scene
One of Asheville's oldest vegetarian restaurants, this cafe exudes a fresh, lighthearted vibe. Outside, sidewalk tables sit beneath a charming covered patio facing a cobblestone street. Inside, the spacious dining area sports lightly colored wood floors, walls painted in bright shades of purple and blue, and a jungle mural on one side of the room. Servers are friendly and deeply knowledgeable about food preparation.
The Food
Dishes on the menu rely heavily on ingredients from local organic growers and range from meat-free comfort foods (sloppy joes, quesadillas) to more creative fare (Thai green curry). Start with warm, cheesy artichoke dip, or lightly-fried Indian-style fritters. Large sandwiches include a grilled Cuban made with black bean spread, tomatoes, caramelized onions, dill pickles, spicy mustard and Gruyere cheese. Dinner entrees range from enchiladas and fajitas to grilled tofu. Wash it all down with an organic carrot juice or fresh fruit smoothie from the juice bar.

Even if you are not vegetarian, you must eat at the Laughing Seed. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area as well. Charming restaurant and location, and you won't believe what they can do with vegetarian cuisine. Yummy!

The Laughing Seed Cafe is an Asheville institution. It has been around for over 15 years. They renovated their entire place plus their menu several years ago, which I think was smart. They serve large portions of delicious food. They do have a reputation for not so good service, which I have definitely experienced. But I have also had great service there, so I guess it depends on who you get and possibly when you go. For me, the prices are a little high, so it's not an every week kind of place, but more for special occasions. For interesting, fun, and healthy vegetarian food, The Laughing Seed is the place to go.

As a vegan it was pure bliss to sit down to a menu *full* of options including appetizers, entrees, desserts and smoothies. We visited Asheville for the first time for a three day weekend and we ate there (with meat-eater friends who LOVED it) three times! I read previous posts about mediocre service, but our service was great. Our servers were very friendly and extremely helpful. I cannot remember the name of the guy who we had the first time, but we had Sarah the other two times and she is an absolute doll. Very helpful to me (vegan) and my friend who is on a Gluten Free diet. She even tailored a dessert special for my GF friend. The food is soooo good, I can't even explain it!! If you were my friend, I'd say you gotta try this place!
