Bold white castle serves artistic and local communities well.
Built in 1903, the old armory fell into disrepair before its rehabilitation as a community and arts center, and the building--restored in 2004--looks magnificent and serves as a cultural beacon in a residential Somerville neighborhood. The purposeful center has become an integral part of the community, providing a site for adults, teens and children’s classes. As a performance venue, the lofty main room hosts visual arts, drama, dance, film and music, in genres from folk to experimental. Studio and office spaces are also hosted in the multiple-use building. The Armory’s ethic is inclusion: Come as you are and do what you do.
