summertime - and the living is breezy.
so much love in my heart for union square's bloc 11. in a city that doesn't particularly encourage lounging, this small but daring cafe (along with much of union square! love to linger) has it down to a science.
during the winter months, they will entice you in with thoughtful hot drinks, free WiFi and the ability to sit in the vault and huddle for warmth - the space, like so many of boston's coolest, used to be a bank. but it's in the summer that bloc 11 really shines.
their amazing lemonade, array of vegetarian-friendly salads and sandwiches (don't worry, meat eaters; they've got you covered too), and above all lovely outdoor patio culminate in an experience that is relaxing and real. perched at a table outside, you can watch the world go by, run into old friends and make new ones; it's almost like a surrogate front yard in a small town. check them out when the sun is high; you won't be disappointed!
The best place to hang now that summer's around the corner. Amidst all of the chaos and traffic cones that a rehabilitating Union Square has to offer stands Bloc 11 Cafe. Referenced by many as Diesel Cafe's Union Square sister, Bloc 11 has its own scene that's a couple notches more mellow and is carved out of what quite possibly could be the coolest venue ever (an old bank!) The best part about Bloc 11, though, is the gated patio out to the side. Outside, you're free (or hopefully far enough away from) the clatter of keyboards and productivity, becoming a part of what essentially is one of the coolest neighborhoods in Somerville. So as the nice weather comes around, hopefully to stay, keep Bloc 11 in mind for awesome outdoor seating with delicious coffee and sandwiches to keep you satiated.
Tasty cafe is committed to sustainability & single-cup brews. This roomy, brick-walled coffeehouse (from the same owners of Davis Square’s popular Diesel Cafe) is a Union Square fixture, drawing everyone from drop-ins to laptop users settling in with the Wi-Fi. Bloc 11 takes its coffee seriously (as one of the few places in Boston that offers single-cup brewing for coffee), and also serves espresso drinks. More than 16 varieties of tea are available via MEM, a local tea distributor in Somerville. The cafe consistently employs natural, sustainable ingredients and minimizes waste by employing dishware and compostable paper goods, and many vegan options are available. The frequently changing menu includes pastries, salads, soups and sandwiches such as the turkey Pallet topped with caramelized onions, goat cheese and fig jam.
