Great food and cool atmosphere – Ate at The National 1/12/10 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Had also eaten at Five and Ten a few weeks prior. All of the items we had were outstanding, the portions about right, and the price not too bad for what's probably the best food in town. The National was quieter and smaller than Five and Ten. If I could only go back and eat at one, I'd chose The National.
Athens coolest restaurant, courtesy of Hugh Acheson. – In Short
The National is not only the best restaurant in Athens, had it been lodged an hour Southwest it might be considered the best restaurant in Atlanta. James Beard award nominee Hugh Acheson’s side project is fresh, clean, hip and the epitome of what this town would consider haute cuisine. Perhaps best known for the crispy pork shoulder plate, the seared frying peppers, or even the incredible (and extremely wallet-friendly) wine selection on constant rotation, The National constantly thrills fresh in-the-know locals, fat-walleted old-school types and even the occasional Hollywood celebrity. Southern accoutrement such as plastic-laminated tablecloths and the western shirt-wearing staff immediately disarm the joint, taking up residence in an old tire re-tread space.
