Iconic place.
Well, it is a Vineyard icon. Rustic setting with average service and a little overpriced but decent food. Lunch best value. BYOB (dry town)

Arrogant service, mediocre food, poor value, not worth the visit.
June 2008
There was a time when The Black Dog was the place to go. I don't know what happened. The competition has increased in Vineyard Haven and The Dog is tired and cranky and not up to the job. Look around, there are places who really appreciate your business.

You've got the T-shirt, now try the comfort food..
In Short
The Vineyard's best-known restaurant owes its fame to savvy marketing--Black Dog T-shirts are ubiquitous and several gift shops across the island extend the brand into every conceivable accessory. The wait can run up to an hour (no reservations), but the rewards are mellow harbor-front views and a cozy, maritime atmosphere. The menu consists of solid comfort food with the odd twist, and breakfast, not dinner, is the star meal here.

Horrible!.
I travel the world with the USAF, left Rhode Island 1982. I return, visit family/friends every July. I make an annual visit to Marthas Vineyard. I have to say I once enjoyed dining at Black Dog. The past 3 years, cuisine has been horrible. I will avoid completely next year, expressing to military and government friends and family do not dine there. The food is better served to the water rats by the pier. I would think w/the great local seafood and cooks graduating from Americas most renowned cooking school (Johnson Whales) or one of the local Great Italian Moms they could serve a decent meal. The Black Dog should loosen their purse strings, hire a decent cook. It is about profit but profit would be higher if reputation wasnt going to the Dogs. I could do a better job cooking up delicious meals than the slop they are serving!

what happened?.
I visited Martha's Vineyard in 1985 and stumbled upon the Black Dog Tavern for some great food and fun ambience. I returned ten years later and found the place was just as good only crazy busy. Last year I couldn't wait to go back. What a disappointment! The food was terrible! Even the bakery which used to put out scratch products was selling frozen pastries (if you could find them amidst all the Black Dog trinkets). What happened?

a landmark.
every visit to martha's vineyard begins with the black dog tavern. and every year we remember why we only come once, the food is really not very good. the space is amazing - i love the black dog. i get my yearly t-shirt and i love the bakery on state road - although it was closed for the season when we were there last week... i can't understand why a place like this can't get someone in their kitchen to make great food? they have the brand name, the amazing location and it's just hard to figure out what's holding the kitchen back. it's still a tradition to go to the black dog upon arrival at the vineyard - maybe next time it'll be good?

Every year we come to MV. Our traditional restaurant is the Black Dog. It is a wonderful place, the food is great (especially breakfast), and the LOCATION IS UNBELIEVABLE!!
