The Scene
Families and young professionals come from far and wide to dig into heaping pulled pork platters and imposing slabs of ribs, amid a southern roadside environment (counter service only). Lunch and dinner hours yield vastly different atmospheres: Noontime visitors enjoy a quiet, relaxed environment and rarely have a problem nabbing an open seat (there are only 12), while most nights bring standing-room-only crowds, forcing larger groups to skip the wait for a seat and take their meals to go.
The Food
Order an assortment of the Ribbon's slow-cooked meats to take a culinary tour of Southern barbecue styles--there's flavorful North Carolina pulled pork, moist Texas brisket, meaty Memphis dry-rubbed ribs, and smoky Kansas City burnt ends. Each platter comes with a choice of sides (maple roasted sweet potatoes and creamy mac-and-cheese are among the top options). Leave room for a slice of delectable, homemade sweet potato pie for dessert.

A family favorite---Blue Ribbon has the best barbeque we've tried in Massachusetts, and we've tried a lot of places! You can't go wrong with the dry-rub ribs. The Texas sliced beef brisket and their half-chickens are mighty tasty too. Not a vegetarian-friendly restaurant; I think even the baked beans have pork in them. Bbq platters are about $10, which come with 2 sides, cornbread & their homemade pickles. They also sell meat and side dishes in bulk. Parking can be a hassle on their tiny street and there's only a handful of seats (which are usually occupied), but we'll drive 1/2 hour here to get take out.

Traditional Southern BBQ places are family operations that are long on great food and a bit short on ambiance. Each one provides a unique experience; the barbeque and sauces are treasured family secrets. Blue Ribbon brings these delightful traditions to the Boston area. The pulled pork barbeque has a wonderful smokey taste and the sauces represent a number of regional tastes (Eastern Carolina, Western North Carolina, South Carolina as a minimum). The only thing missing is true home-brewed sweet tea. If you go there hungry, you will leave satisifed.

I ordered the BBQ Rib Sandwich, expecting boneless rib meat pulled from the bone, on a sub roll or something. To my dismay, I received three rib bones, soaked in BBQ sauce, in between two pieces of white Wonder bread! The bread was so soaked in BBQ sauce that it disintegrated instantly. The BBQ sauce tasted like nothing, the baked beans were sour, and the cole slaw was awful as if it had been laying around for 2 weeks. If I wanted ribs with a side of bread, I would have ordered that. But I ordered a Rib Sandwich! This was not a sandwich, and it was tasteless for an authentic BBQ restaurant. I've had better BBQ from McDonald's.....it was called the McRib. This place has much to learn about BBQ food, and food in general, you know the place is lame when they can't get cole slaw right....
