A Regular Haunt, But Not Always a Favorite.
I tend to go to Donohue's in East Watertown fairly regularly, sometimes 3 or 4 times a month, mostly for drinks, but sometimes for dinner. The food at this neighborhood pub can actually be very good at times, and combining it with a pitcher or two of beer can make for a pleasant evening, especially if one of the spacious round booths in the right-hand room is available.
Sometimes I get a bit fed up with the place, though, especially when it's packed and noisy, and when there is (gulp) karaoke, which in paraphrasing Anthony Bourdain, is one of my two favorite things in life along with freezing to death. Whenever it's crowded and loud, I think to myself that it'd be better going to a nearby place like Conley's, especially since I'm a big fan of their pizza.
But my on-again, off-again relationship with Donohue's will likely continue, as it can be a fun place to hang with friends, and while the beer prices have gone up substantially over the past few years (especially for pitchers), it remains a relatively cheap night out.
Brilliant !. 1. I called to see if they were open and was greeted with a welcoming phone manner, that was my start of a wonderful experience! The owner was our Barman and worked the room effortlessly while he answered a myriad of questions from my Girlfriend and Yours Truly. This is deffinetly a Pub to experience! Great fish&Chips and rings! Great coctails and an attentive staff & great Prices will return when ever possible ! Thanks J.D. ! Charlie
Great local bar. My friends and I love Donohue's! Great Irish pub, delicious food, and great service. The last time I went I asked the waitress if she liked the soup they had that night, and she was really nice and put some in a small bowl for me to try. They have table taps, a fun jukebox, and great specials on food and drink during the day. Nice cozy bar, great place to hang out with friends.
Comfy Irish pub supplies Watertown residents with pub fare, good cheer and plenty of beer..
In Short
With plenty of seating, a handsome wooden bar and lots of local memorabilia, Donohue's provides area workers and residents with a most inviting after-work spot. The lengthy menu of comforting bar fare includes roast beef dinners and daily lunch specials. With the bar's solid drink selection and plethora of TVs, including a 50-inch plasma, sports fans are well taken care of.
Great Sports bar with suprisingly great food...maintains local flavor.
I Have visited Donohues for big games, etc over the past 5 years. This really is a great place to watch a Sox, Pats, BC, Celtics or any sporting event for that matter. My friends and I follow Notre Dame in addition to a number of teams and players for Fantasy sports purposes, and Donohues never misses a beat. You might catch a little slack from the staff, but that's half the fun of it....getting your chops busted for wanting to see the last 5 minutes of Fresno State/ Hawaii game at 12:50 on a Tuesday!! C'mon brotha!
The Food is top notch and has continued to improve....everything from Salads to wings and weekly specials. The waitresses and barstaff are really nice, but it can get really crowded, so be patient.
Overall, very highly recommended.
Perfect neighborhood place. Great Place to go and watch the game, been there for the big games and have had a great time every time. This neighborhood place has it all.
Sports Bar?. Not for this football/baseball lifer. This bar/pub has two rooms with bars and tvs but no one wants to be in the second room because the number of games that are viewable there are limited. Since many of us want to see multiple games (and sports) all at once, everyone crowds into the one room and overwhelms the waitstaff during the busy periods - just when you would want to be there. Also, if you want to see games involving teams other than Red Sox/Patriots, you are often treated like a pariah. While the food is good and waitstaff generally friendly, you are better off in the comfort of your own home or a less busy bar if you have some other team you want to watch.
Doesn't cut it as a Sport's Bar. The staff here just doesn't get it. I know that Boston's a one team town in all sports, but people who go to sports bars want often do so because they can't see their home team any other way. The staff here just doesn't make an effort to show the right NFL action -- and is rude about it too. Its a shame because its got the other stuff right -- good food, good drink, good tv's.
Good food cheap. Food is great, especially-- surprisingly enough, the salads. 10 cent wings on Sunday and Monday nights are awesome, and are available in several types. The chicken nachos are a must. Service can be so-so when it's busy, but weekday nights it's a great bet.
