Best bar in the area - hands down! – It's got something for everyone and it's all perfectly balanced. Exceptional pub food - basically restaurant quality, but not chi chi nor expensive (FAR better than the Burren's fare). Big TV's for sports fans, but they don't dominate the ambience or the crowd. The music is eclectic, some Irish, some Americana, some hipster, some funk. There are plenty of exotic imports, microbrews / artsy beers and plenty of normal beers. Aficionado or not, you'll like your beer here. The scene has something for everyone too. It's rowdy on Superbowl Sunday, quiet for lunch; good place for poker or dominoes, not not just a sit-down place; packed solid on Friday / Saturday nights, but open and calm enough for the laptop crowd during the day. Pick-up lines won't work here, but you will meet interesting people here, worth chatting with.
It's not too big, not too small, not too dark, not too open; sometimes insane, sometimes tranquil, sometimes sporty, sometimes artsy. It's just right.
Great locals spot.... – Friends and I always drop by the Scholar for some brews and occasional eats. A local favorite right along the Cambridge/Somerville line, it is laid-back and just a great place to get a drink and chat with good friends. A great place for larger groups and to watch the "game." Try the shepherd's pie and any one of the many beers they have available or get a table tap for fun. There are always good beer specials as well!!
Food and drink for thought: This lively local favorite serves no-frills fare and hosts a variety of live events. – In Short
Other watering holes claim closer proximity to the scholars of Harvard and MIT, but such details don't appear to bother the mostly local crowd at this drafty pub. Perhaps the patrons are distracted by the outrageously loud, live Irish crooning that erupts some evenings. A diverse list of draught beers and inexpensive basic pub fare make regulars out of first-timers. Menu items include juicy burgers, fresh salads and full Irish breakfasts.
