In Short
With a pub-like, mahogany setting and Guinness flowing from the tap, a Celtic atmosphere permeates the Phoenix during the day. At night, the bar turns into a popular dance club where DJs spin everything from drum-and-bass to international house. A largely expatriate crowd piles in on the weekends to watch live English Premier League soccer matches. Peckish patrons enjoy straightforward pub grub (wings, skins, burgers) along with selections from the well-stocked bar.

Some friends and I hit the Phoenix one night and had a surprisingly good night. We thought it was just like any other small local Boston bar but they had some great music playing that night and we danced for hours. It's not a very big bar and I wouldn't plan to go there to dance - but if it isn't too crowded and the modd strikes you, go for it!

the previous post couldnt be further from the truth. who goes to an irish pub/dance club to drink wine. and she is calling the phoenix pretentious? hmmm. fact is, DJ Vinny has been tearing up Friday and Saturday nights there for almost ten years and it's for a reason. arguably one of the longest standing "residencies" in the city it remains the hottest. if you dont like honest behavior stay home and watch TV otherwise s**k the marrow out of life and head to the Phoenix. an unpretentious, eclectic crowd of all sizes, shapes, colors, ages, and demographics. crowded? perhaps, but what great place isn't? it's because people WANT to be there!!!!

I went to this bar on a saturday night for 80's dancing with my mom. I wanted her to have a good time while visiting, but instead I was mortified by the behavior of the doorman and the owner of this bar. Both were extremely rude. Also, this is a tiny bar that is really too small for decent dancing, as we were elbow to elbow with drunk kids who seemed like they could not possibly be 21. Moreover, the wine selection was not great. I would not recommend this pretentious dive bar to anyone.
