The Scene
A local institution since 1975, Harvest has long been the go-to spot for Cambridge luminaries and visiting academics in search of seasonal, upscale New England cuisine. The interior, all warm woods and muted browns, befits the restaurant's name, and the handsome, clandestine bar provides one of Harvard Square's most romantic date spots. Informed, polite servers are well-versed in the menu's many intricate ingredients (Guanchala, Mejoul dates).
The Food
With a menu that's dotted with local products (Block Island swordfish, Wellfleet clams), and classic New England touches (finnan haddie sauce), Harvest guarantees a decidedly local take on seasonal, modern American fare. Memorable starters include smoky chicken livers, seared and served with baby spinach, smooth goat cheese and warm bacon vinaigrette. Entrees include several unique fish preparations (think egg-battered halibut with cippolini onions, chanteray carrots and Russian banana fingerlings in a veal jus). Desserts like malted chocolate cheesecake with bruleed bananas also thrill.

I have been going to Harvest for many years, and although they've had their ups and downs with various chefs, they've been in a good place for at least a year or two. It's a lovely restaurant for lunch or dinner, and the patio is fun in warm weather (beware, first come, first-served on the patio). Food is high quality, trendy in a good way, and the service is usually friendly and efficient. It's not a cheap restauarnt by any means, but it's good value.

Very simply, delicious food and attentive wait staff. We went during restaurant week so it was very busy and had a more electic crowd than usual... but it definitely didn't disappoint.

My wife and I were seated at Harvest Restaurant at 7PM as per our reservation on a Saturday night through Open Table. We were there with a gift card from our daughter for our 35th wedding anniversary. We got up to leave after 20 minutes when no waiter had yet come to the table. The room was half full at best and a ll other staff avoided eye contact. The hostess reacted by saying, "What do we have to do to have you dine with us". Not looking to negotiate, but just looking for a good meal on our special occasion, we left. Our 100 Open Table points were immediately deducted by the hostess even though we had been seated. Open Table, reinstated the points without any questions. Horrible and insensitive service by Harvest.
