Hidden Gem
by Birdie2 at Citysearch
Manchester By The Book is one of the last of its kind to survive the unfortunate takeover by national bookstore chains. The friendly owner is happy to make suggestions based on your taste and interests. The shelves and tables of hard to find books are coupled with the latest best sellers. It's a treasure chest of words and a perfect place for readers of all ages to spend a minute or an entire afternoon.
- Pros: Customer service, hard to find books
- Cons: nadda
What a gem!

The maps of Cape Ann ought to have the words HERE BE TREASURE, with an X over a corner of Union Street
on old Route 127 in Manchester-by-the-Sea. If the
characters on LOST found this place under the infamous Hatch, they might never come out. In short, this a booklover's blast. With a comfy couch!!
- Pros: He just gets the neatest stuff
- Cons: He keeps adding neat stuff and I must have it all

For those coming to Singing Beach in the summer by car or rail: when dark clouds loom and rain ensues and you have to leave the beach, get yourself to Manchester-by-the-Book. You can spend all day amongst the stacks and it's right near the train station, in the heart of downtown. Locals know about this haunt that's been around for over 10 years and is a staple in Manchester-by-the-Sea. If you don't find what you're looking for, the owner, Mark Stolle, who minds the shop virtually every day, will be more than happy to help you or at the very least have an invigorating discussion. Treat yourself to an afternoon of being surrounded by books, in any weather or season, and enjoy!
- Pros: great selection of used and rare books
- Cons: n/a
