First Class Education In Life

My son has been going to Beyond Self Defense since he was 4. The classes are FREE for 4 yr olds, and all other classes are around $55-$95 per month. Three days per week, an hour each time, are available to my son for the $55 fee (he is 7). The values they instill in their students is respect for yourself and others, you never put your hands on anyone unless they are trying to hurt you, and a sense of importance in each child. As much as we would like to think the schools in our town are on top of bullying, I can tell you they are not really doing much about fights in the schoolyard, especially if it isn't physical. Kids have to learn how to diffuse a situation themselves, because it is happening here and it is often ignored. In this way BSD is unique, in as they stress the non-violent resolution to a dispute first. Also sprinkled in are advice about bullying, staying away from substance abuse and trouble,good/bad touching, strangers, physical and emotional health. I can not say enough about how much this has helped my sons confidence level, and the dodgeball game that ends each class is a fun activity for all, the parents enjoying watching as much as the kids enjoy playing! The dojo is tucked away behind Alano on downtown Wakefield, but well worth the look. One big room, the dojo is lined with mirrors, and all equiptment nessasary is provided ( belts are a fee but it is far below that of other places, and the stripes do not cost, and if your child wants to stick with it you may want to get gloves or special shoes, but both are minimally priced and neither are needed). Chairs are available around the edges of the room for those who want to stay, but drop off is okay, too. There is a dunkins within walking distance ( on Main St) I have and will continue to recommend this to parents, as it is an education in life that is important in this day and age. You will not get things sugar coated here, but the lessons are invaluable with Beyond Self Defense.
