In Short – The Terminator and the Incredible Hulk (aka Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno) lifted weights at the gym's Venice, California, flagship years ago, but even today, customers frequenting charter locations are bound to encounter serious muscle. Take note: The boys with bulging biceps are the mascots, not the majority. Gold's generally offers Spinning, aerobics and kickboxing classes, yet weight-training remains the core of the program. Dumbbells and barbells, not spa-like amenities, are the attractions that draw the beef-heads in droves.

Impossible to cancel your membership

A year ago I wanted to join a gym (new year's resolution). The most convenient place for me was Gold's Gym in Concord, MA. I went in, got a tour, and ended up signing up. Unfortunately for me, that was the biggest mistake ever.

The people at the gym don't care about you, don't help you with questions, and could basically care less what your expectations are. The place was full of meat heads and people there to check themselves out in the mirror. Nobody there cares about anyone else except themselves. I felt isolated and exposed all at the same time. Needless to say, I couldn't wait to cancel this waste of money.

Turns out you can't cancel you membership unless you have a doctor's note (what is this, elementary school?) or unless you move 25 miles away. What?! Yup, it's true. You can't even go in to complain to the owner about this - because he doesn't care. Gold's Gym pimps out their contracts to ABC Financial in IL or something. So any questions/complaints you have, they direct you to call ABC. ABC doesn't care what you think - they already have your account number. To cancel you have to send a letter - CERTIFIED MAIL - and it has to get there a month BEFORE you actually want to cancel. So if you want to cancel in March, your cancellation request better be there before Feb, 1 - or you will get charged for an additional month. You must send it certified mail, or else they will deny having recv'd your request. Trust me, I know. Oh yeah, one more thing they don't tell you - every January, regardless of when you join, you are charged a $20 maintenance fee. FOR WHAT?!? No clue. Joining this gym has been the biggest hassle ever. The quality of the gym and the classes don't make up for it. If you must join, make sure you pay the extra $20 a month so you can cancel whenever you want - 'cuz I guarantee you won't want to stay there very long.
