Editorial Review for The Grove – by Andrea Loera

In Short
Located across the street from the convention center, this two-story, ultra-urban restaurant headed by Executive Chef Ryan Pera (formerly of 17) is one of two restaurants in downtown Houston's newest park. The one-of-a-kind green space is surrounded by towering oak trees with an expansive dining room highlighting modern design accents. The menu features rustic American cuisine such as Gulf Coast seafood, steaks and signature rotisserie dishes. The Treehouse roof deck bar features casual bar snacks and a see-and-be-seen atmosphere for cocktails.

I don't understand what all the hype is about. The staff is rude and slow. I am not expecting Cafe Annie quality service or food but I know they can do better than Chili's or Friday's. The people who answers the phone just seem like they are just there to get a check, they don't understand that between them & the hostess, that is our first impression. You couple that with slowwwwwwwwwwww service and medicore food not much else to say. The location is good, the interior is very nice and the prices are reasonable for the location.

I dined with 4 others on Friday night. We had reservations and were seated after a small wait. I was surprised to find the wine list on a piece of laminated paper, but it all made sense once we asked our waiter about a recommendation. Our waiter had no wine knowledge and generally lacked in overall ability. Worst of all, the food was subpar. Truly a forgetable evening. Although I appreciate the effort to cook with organic and local food, I will not soon go back, not even for the atmosphere.

Pros: Locale

Cons: Everything else
