I am a transplant from the East Coast,
but have had some great salon experiences here in Ohio, as well as out of state. I have been to Square One, as well as to several other salons in the area multiple times.
As much as I feel that Square One is a great business, after a few appointments there, I have concluded that it is a mediocre salon. The salon is clean, has attractive decor and ambiance, and the staff is friendly and professional. However, I have seldom left Square One with a hair cut or color that I was happy with. I have had my hair done by their most and least experienced stylists and still feel this way. Unless you call in advance, you are likely to be placed with a "Designer Level" stylist-many Aveda salons, such as S1, offer stylist services on three levels, which they will tell you are related to their progress in the Aveda continuing education process or something or other, but really usually amounts to their level of experience.
The designer level stylists at Square One are usually very young and this shows in their performance. I have been able to book fairly far in advance a couple of times and have had the opportunity to see two Advanced-level stylists who did much better jobs than the less-experienced ones. However, I was still dissatisfied by their cuts and even styling! For instance, I have requested to have my hair curled in loose waves or blown-out with a round brush, and without fail, this results in tight little-bo peep curls (lol), or in pin-straight blow-outs when I requested body and wave (and my hair type is reportedly easy to give body to). This should not happen at a "high end" salon. Advanced stylists at such a salon should be able to whip out a good blow dry or attractive curls without much struggle or guidance from the client, in my experience.
I will say that I have had nice experiences there with eyebrow waxing and manicures/pedicures, however, for cuts and color there are other salons (even other Aveda salons) in the close vicinity that I would choose before Square One (sadly, because I think it is such a cute and well-run place)
I wanted to provide insight into the Aveda Salon in Centerville, Ohio (Square One). I arrived to the location 15 minutes early (2:45pm) on 9/27/2012 for my appointment with Gena. I checked in with the reception desk. I was shown the waiting area and was told that she would be with me shortly. I waited ONE HOUR and decided to let the receptionist that I would be leaving as I was tired of waiting. I walked up to the desk. The girl said hello and asked my name. I told her and said I was leaving because I was tired of waiting. She looked in the computer and said I had been checked in, but Gena was not going to be in and did I want to reschedule? Seriously??????? I was shocked and said no. She said they tried to call me earlier, but did not leave a message (again..seriously..no message?) I can not pick up at work, so a message would have been the appropriate measure. I thought this would be a high end salon and would be treated well. VERY EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. I had made the appointment on Monday for a Thursday. They had left a message on Tuesday verifying the appointment. Why not leave a message to let me know that Gena decided not to go to work...why check me in and make me wait an hour (longer if I had not gone down to the desk I would imagine. Again....disappointment does not even cover the experience I had. To bad..you missed out on what could have been a long term customer not to mention the potential customers that I will share this experience with.
Bad Haircut, Trashy Owner. Not to impressed haircut was terrible and overpriced for a simple military fade...while I was there I saw a man yelling at an employee and honestly I wanted to slam him on the ground for talking to someone like that... Come to find out he was the owner of square one...I am a local police officer and veteran I will make sure I tell every officer and soldier to stay away from this place since men should show respect to woman.
Love It!. I love going to Square One! It's a very young salon. They have a ton of highly recommended services. They do all my hair cuts, styling and make-up for every occasion. All the staff is up beat and really nice. The salon is clean and has a very stress free enviorment. Love It!
Love this place. I have been going to square one for three years. I absolutly love this place. Everyone is super friendly and very willing to help you. If your getting your hair done ask for Stephanie. Every time I go I get exactly what I wanted and most of the time it looks even better than I expected. The salon is very nice and very relaxing. They also give you complimentary facials when you get your hair colored. I highly recommened square one in centerville.
Fantastic place for color, highlights and styling. Courtney is the best colorist and stylist there. I highly recommend her. We discussed a different hair cut and she suggested a solution and looks great. Thanks for the good work! I already made my 6 week follow up appointment!
High on attitude low on IQ.. I went in for a gloss, cut and style. I asked for a simple bob no bangs. I just spent the last 5 months growing them out from the last "stylist" who cut them. I was going from long hair to short and it was as if they were afraid to cut my hair, this was obviously a clear indication of incompetence. I should have left the situation. I like people and I will give most anyone a chance being judgemental is a poor quality. Wrong. I love the "stylist" trick of pulling out mistakes with a hot iron only to be discovered by the patron after your first wash. My hair was not glossy and took an hour and forty five minutes for her to officially destroy my hair for the next however long it takes to grow out of 1992. Never go back to have it "fixed". my hair is worse than the first f#ck up. To much blahblahblah on and on(as if i care) and not enough listening to what I wanted. And if I want to see your tattoos I will ask please do not force them on me. I would also recommend stepping off your high horse the styles offered here are years behind and poorly executed in resembling the originals. I have friends covered in tattoos with more class and versatile talent than one might find in this establishment. I`m guessing the first time I had gone in tipping well enough to invoke positive incentive was confused with weakness since I was treated so poorly on the second visit treated with no extra amenities(such as head massage and complimentary facial) everyone else seemed to be enjoying. I would not recommend this salon to my neighbors dog. I spend quite a bit of money on salon services and products. I also have a strong belief in rewarding those who provide excellent service with grand generosity. Your loss Square One. No stars bitches.
Overpriced and underskilled. I have been wearing my hair in a ponytail ever since getting my hair cut at Square One two weeks ago. The stylist did such a poor job that I am not even willing to go back there to have it corrected. I am just waiting it out until I can get in at another salon. I have a very simple haircut, long and layered, and she did not even cut it evenly. Thanks to a lot of product and a straightening iron, it looked ok when I left the salon, but it is actually shaggy and uneven. I would feel better about it had a student cut my hair, but this was a $50 haircut by a supposed master stylist. This experience left me never wanting to go back there again, and I do not recommend it to anyone due to the high cost and apparent lack of talent.
