Folksy mountain that will provide free skiing if you help spruce up the grounds.. The Lowdown
Opened since 1926, Blandford, owned and operated by the Springfield Ski Club, is the oldest continuously operating club-owned ski area in North America. It hasn't changed much. Its 26 trails are mostly intermediate, with six beginner and four expert runs to round it out. They have stepped into the 21st Century with a half-pipe and snowboard lessons. The family-oriented racing programs are respected and fun. There's a spot for skiers of all levels, but families rule.

Work and Play
How folksy is Blandford? How many resorts give you a season's pass in exchange for help sprucing up the grounds in the fall? This is a membership mountain, with annual dues just $199. But if you call ahead in autumn and offer to, say, paint the walls inside the lodge, you could ski for free. They even hold a sprucing-up party to make the work fun.
