Franklin Road location – I have eaten breakfast five days a week at this restaurant location for many years before it was bought by Sweet Tea owners.
Since it has become Sweet Tea, I have been horribly disappointed by the food, the service, and the prices.
The food servings are scimpy and often poorly cooked. Sylan served more food for less money, and it was ALWAYS good. That's a good indication of why they had so much business. Sweet Tea changed the food portions immediately. Less food for more money, and the bacon is stuck together, the eggs are cold and dark.
If that isn't enough, after twenty years, I knew all of Sylvan's waitresses and its owner by first name, and they knew me. They made me feel welcome when I walked in the door. Why didn't the owner of Sweet Tea learn about Sylvan's customer base before opening those doors with its new name? Some of this new staff does not know what hospitality means. Also, Sylvan was fast in delivering food. It now takes entirely too long to get less food of lower cooking quality.
To make matters worse, customers now get much less food for much more money. Now I don't own a business, but even I know that doesn't make sense. Did this owner not stop to think that the customer base would compare all of these major changes to what they were content with in Sylvan?
I am so disappointed that I've had to take a break in eating there. I will go back because they are in the neighborhood, but I sure hope they make some improvements before I do.
Not good – They have a new location now on 8th Avenue, where Sylvan Park Restaurant used to be. When it was Sylvan Park, the place was very busy, people crowding in for all hours during lunch. The first indication that something had changed was that all the previous wait staff (of Sylvan Park) were gone. All new faces. Why? Then the next indication that something was wrong, is that the place was about half-full. Why? Then I found out why the place was half-food. The service was extremely slow, way too slow. It was so slow that we started wondering what was wrong. When the food finally came, some of the order was missing. The cornbread was very greasy. The greens were overcooked and not fresh. The catfish fillets were bland. The missing part of the order never showed up and we asked that it be taken off the bill. When we left, we knew we would never return. We had eaten there hundreds of times when it was Sylvan, but Sweet Tea Diner is doing something wrong.
Avoid Even If You Have An "Eat Free" Coupon!!!! – The location on Franklin Road (8th Avenue) used to be Sylvan Park and was good, but the ownership change to the Sweet Tea Diner ruined it.
How can you run out of mashed potatoes; white meat chicken; cornbread; and plates -- yes plates, the rolls had to be placed on napkins! And don't even think about getting a drink refill! I waited 15 minutes to be seated, not because there were no open tables, but because there was no hostess to seat people that were waiting. This place would not be worth going to even if it was free.
Better than fast food? – My husband and I decided to try this place out , I was open to something new, tired of the same o same o.. Unfortunately this wasnt as "homeade tasting " as its supposed to be. We visited early friday afternoon, wasnt busy, just a moderate flow of customers.. The time it took to get the food was unreasonable especially since it was "fish fry friday" and it was greasy and the squash was just as greasy when we finally did get it. So the all you can eat fish fry turned into how much could you stomach.. They did bring some "fresh out " but then again it took another 10 minutes to get some fresh fish, by this time our other food was getting cold..etc etc..
I could go on and on...
Needless to say we wont be back...
A real disappointment – We dined here because of the positive reviews on Yelp (and I was weary of Cracker Barrel). But the experience was extremely disappointing. Service on a Friday night was VERY slow. And the food was not worth the wait. The catfish filets were greasy, the fried squash was the same, the boiled cabbage was tasteless, and the turnip greens tasted as if they had come from a can. Only the hush puppies were good. And that is not a reason for a return visit. Our server seemed indifferent to the fact I left most of the food on my plate. Apparently the response of "It was OK" in reply to the query of "How was everything?" constitutes their idea of a rave review.
Cracker Barrel here we come!
