Used to be better....
I've been to 417 quite a few times, probably 25 or 30 over the past year, maybe more. I was a quick convert when I started working downtown in spring of '09. My favorite meal there quickly became the chicken and dressing (Thursdays) with green beans, mashed potatoes, and cornbread. The dressing was dense and flavorful, not "bready" and dry, and the gravy on top was a rich chicken gravy; also, the chicken was consistently juicy and tender. Now, the same meal consists of decent chicken, dryer and less flavorful (and "breadier") dressing, and gravy that is both not chicken gravy and that must surely come out of a giant can or jar (it's salty, dark, and not rich). I have no clue why the quality has gone down a bit. It's still pretty good. But it's certainly not worth $11.01 plus tip for a blue plate (meat and two) plus drink. If I'm going to drop $13 or so, I'd rather go somewhere else. And, just for the record, the prices have gone up a couple of times over the past year; they started out a little steep, and now they're bordering on unreasonable.
Anyway, it's overall pretty good. On a good day, the BBQ pork chop is downright fantastic. And I do love their green beans... But service is often very slow, and whereas I used to go there about once or twice a week, I now go there about once a month, if that, and I only work a block away. Frankly, I'm frustrated...I'd much rather be there once a week. :-)
Breakfast Breakfast Breakfast, Brunch.. I work downtown and recommend this place for a late breakfast/early lunch to all. It has a unique atmosphere for both tourists and locals alike.
I am now complete. I'm sorry for being hyper niche here, but what can I say? Some people know wine, some people know creme brulee... I know French Toast. The French Toast I had at 417 Union was unexpectedly amazing. Some friends and I checked it out for a new breakfast place and I continued my exhaustive (and often exhausting) search for great french toast as I always do, and then WHAM. I swear its like finding a $100 bill in your pants pocket after they're washed. If french toast is your thing, and I pity you if it isn't, you've gotta try this restaurant
Great example of independent local dining. In for the marathon this weekend and the Doubletree recommended this place. It was busy, but then I suppose there are a few extra thousand of us this weekend! The servers treated us very well and kept us updated on the status of our food, which we can't deny came out slow, but was definitely worth the wait. Pro tip: get the 417 Omelet, and if its a marathon weekend, don't be in a rush.
Slow, expensive, and pitiful. Service was slow. The waiter was okay. Can't blame him for the food being slow and tasteless. However the waiter did continue to stop by our table with dirty dishes in his hand...how gross. He also had the never to bring me a refill in a dirty glass. uggg! We only had an hour for lunch but it took that long to have the food prepared. After at least a 30 - 45 minute wait we asked the waiter to box the food. y did we do that. boxing the food took another 15 - 20 minutes. Then there was no bread no discount and not enough meat to go around. 3 of the 4 of us ordered similar meals. one had to change due to the shortage lol. Then the waiter told us there was no bread. somehow he did not find this out until an hour and 15 mintues after we ordered. The food is way over priced, unseasoned, and dry. I WILL NOT RETURN AND DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT.
Awful customer service: Never go to 417 if you are in a rush.
I went with a group of six to 417 Union today for lunch. We went early, before the lunch rush. The wait staff upstairs was not friendly and only offered a single refill of our drinks, which we had to ask for. The food took an HOUR to arrive! Then, sensing that we were disappointed in our service, the waitress took our checks downstairs rather than to the table. When we went to pay, we were charged with a mandatory 18% gratuity because our group had six in it!!! We expressed our disappointment in the slow service. While it may not all have been the waitress's fault, she could have been more accomodating by explaining any problem and providing us with refills.
Please don't go to 417 Union if you are in a rush! It's slow and sad.
Very impressed. If you work downtown, there are few restaurants that have so many things going for them as 417 Union does at lunchtime. Their REAL milkshakes are to die for and have gotten me through many a long tax-season afternoon. The location is excellent--so central. The service is friendly, "homey," efficient, and accurate, which makes for successful and pleasant business lunches as well as casual lunch engagements like afternoon breaks or office birthday outings. The atmosphere has so much character! Like going back in time to the 1940s--not that I was alive back then, but the place simply captures the essence of an era when life was clearer and patriotism was a little easier to come by. But best of all, the FOOD is great--big portions, delicious, satisfying--comfort food, deli food, healthy food, whatever you're looking for it's on the menu. I liked it so much that I've gone back for dinner a few times and was similarly impressed. It would also be a great place for a party.
Our Hats Are Off To The Chef And His Whole Crew. We have eaten at 417 Union several times. The food has been good every time, whether we had hot, tasty sandwiches, pasta, traditional southern cuisine, or treats from the old-fashioned soda fountain. .Our servers were prompt, friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the 40's theme, and the rooms upstairs are absolutely beautiful. We do not live in Nashville, but 417 seems to be very conveniently located in its downtown location.
Love those Milkshakes!. Everytime I walk into 417 Union, I feel like I'm coming home. I love getting the Salmon Caesar Salad, but then the waitress (always friendly) comes over and suggests one of their delicious desserts, or I give myself a treat with a Chocolate Coke Float or Vanilla Milkshake! Man, oh, man, and then there's the fries. And whenever there's someone playing upstairs on a Saturday night, I just have to come and check them out....this is by far, my favorite place to hang!
