Overlooking the famous Sonny Bono statue in Mercado Plaza, this upscale bistro pleases both the 20-something drinking crowd and the more mature diner with carefully crafted cocktails, chargrilled burgers and even steak and seafood selections. It's really the pizza that has made this Washington D.C. transplant a desert favorite, though. Burning at over 800-degrees, their masonry oven continuously returns crisp and flaky pies night after night. Toppings range between spicy home-made meatballs, Italian sausage and roasted red peppers to milder vegetables, portabella mushrooms and artichoke…
Rare combination: Great view and great food
by KellieC
The upstairs, open-air locale made this a great spot to people watch, especially on Thursday nights when the street market is in full swing. We had a group of 16 and the service couldn't have been more professional or attentive. Pizzas were great and the build-your-own ingredients were high quality. Sun dried tomatoes may have had more flavor than the oven-dried. The chicken parmesan was not well liked. Servers knew the wine list and made good recommendations. The margarita-tini comes in its own souvenier shaker - tacky, you might think, but the drink itself is worth a little embarrassment. Their house chianti was also surprisingly flavorful. Loved it and would return for a romantic dinner, family dinner or night out with friends. Their professional service and great food can't be beat.
- Pros: Service is exceptional
- Cons: popular - may have a wait if no reservation
Good solo experience
by ExplorePDX
I was visiting from out of town, and dining solo. I went to Matchbox after googling "happy hour Palm Springs" because I was looking for a real restaurant with good food but not so upscale that it would be uncomfortable dining alone (you know what I mean, where they stick you in the worst spot and then rush you through...). The service was outstanding, and the food excellent. Happy hour menu was reasonable. I really enjoyed the more mellow atmosphere of the earlier dining also. I plan to return. You should try it too.
- Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Happy hour menu
- Cons: Regular menu is a bit pricey ($14 for a small pizza...)
