The Best Seafood By a Dam Site!

by Adelestyle at Citysearch

Jim's Seafood is at the heart of downtown, right on the Kentucky River's Lock #4. It's locally operated by an 80 year old couple who have lived in Frankfort their entire lives.

They use local grains and the same old-fashioned batters they've been using for decades. People complain that they're no Applebees, no O'Charlies. They're right! Jim's Seafood is one of the anomolies. It's a mom and pop on a historical landmark that has survived the Walmart boom in middle- America. It's time to show them some love. I was born and raised in Frankfort, KY and have watched as nearly all of our historical restaurants closed their doors shortly after the new Walmart Sprawl off highway 127:

Sandy's Steakhouse (over 20 years in business)

Farmers Kitchen

Columbia's Steakhouse (over 20 years in business)

Jubilee Dragon (over 20 years in business)

Scotty's Pink Pig Bar-B-Que (over 30 years in business)

Rio's Steakhouse (over 10 years in business)

Yagle's Hardware (over 40 years in business)

Smith's Florist (over 25 years in business)

to name a few...

Let's protect what beautiful cultural centers we have in Frankfort. Let's eat at JIm's Seafood!

  • Pros: awesome deep fried banana peppers and fish
  • Cons: no liquor

Service and food have been sliding recently

by LsDano at Citysearch

I've been going to Jim's for years. It sits right on the river so the view can't be equaled anywhere in Frankfort. They have seafood which is a rarity in central Kentucky. Although it's been a favorite of mine, it's been going steadily downhill for years now. My last visit there will be just that, my last visit.

My wife and I wanted a nice dinner for Saturday night so we picked Jim's. We got right in and ordered quickly, but it took forever for our meal to make its appearance. When it did arrive, it was cold and completely flavorless. We had the broiled seafood. The scallops were rubbery and cold, the shrimp came in a cup and had something sprinkled on it that didn't give it any flavor. The fish was scrod and it was gelatinous and unpleasant.

We made it through half the meal before an older gentleman wandered over and asked how things were. We told him honestly, not in a hostile way but in a matter of fact way. He mumbled something about how it was the same fish they always serve and wandered off. A second manager type came by and was more sympathetic and offered us more scrod. We declined.

In addition to the food, my diet coke was horrible. The waitress said it was probably running low and that the hostess tried it and agreed that it was bad. Still didn't help the flavor any. We left 1/2 our meal, paid the bill before we were forced to eat any more scrod, and got out of there. Eat at Jim's at your own risk, it's been going downhill for years.

  • Pros: Nice river view
  • Cons: Everything but the nice river view
