DON'T SHOP HERE! – On March 21, 2011, I went to M. Simon Furniture to purchase a simple recliner. I expected a simple pain-free purchase but this turned into one of my my worst retail decisions I have ever made. While at the store I found a recliner that I liked on the sales floor. Unfortunately, it had already sold and the store had to order one for me. At the time of my purchase, I was told by the salesman that the recliner should be in by the first of April. I went to the store on Saturday, April 2 and was informed by our salesman that the chair would arrive in a couple of weeks and he had no idea why he had told me it would be in by the first of April. He told me that he would follow up on the status of the chair and then call me back on Monday to let me know. No one from the store called me on Monday, April 4 to follow up about our chair. This was two weeks from the date of purchase. So, my wife called the store later that week to follow up on the status of the chair and was told it would arrive around April 15. On April 15, my wife called back to the store to follow up and the lady who answered the phone told her that the chair would arrive at the store on Friday, April 22. I called the store again on Monday, April, 25 and spoke to the salesman again. He informed me that the chair was still in transit and would arrive sometime later that week. At this point I began to doubt this chair even existed so, I asked him if I could cancel my order. He told me that he could not cancel the order because it was already in transit. I asked what my options were and he informed me that I had none and that he would call when the chair arrives to set up a delivery time. Once again, the salesman was unable to commit to a delivery date and was very unhelpful. (I am convinced at this point that since I prepaid for the recliner the store has no motivation to get the recliner to me because they already have my money).
I would like to warn any other consumers in the market for furniture to go elsewhere. If I had gone online and read the reviews of M. Simon Furniture prior to my purchase, I would have known that these are very common practices for their store. There are many negative reviews online for this store. I now know why the store is always empty of customers when I go in. It is because this store displays a complete disregard to its customers and their satisfaction. I try to support the local businesses in Frankfort, but then when something like this happens, it makes me regret that I did not go to Lexington or Louisville and purchase from a “big box” retailer. M. Simon Furniture needs to get new management and reevaluate their business model. If the salesman had been honest with us up front about the delivery time and the people on the phone and in the store had not been rude and given us the run around, we would have never had an issue. But since we were given the run around by the sales staff, we will no longer be purchasing any products from their store and will not recommend them to anyone. If you want furniture, go somewhere other than M. Simon Furniture to purchase it. This will save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Please learn from my mistake and always check the reviews online and stay away from M. Simon Furniture.
rip-off – Bought a fairly expensive bunk bed there. Within the 1-year warranty period, the ledge attached to the side of the bed broke off. Filed a warranty claim. "Joe", the owner, had us send pictures in to show the damage, which we immediately did. Over one month later, the bed had not been fixed. Joe was rude to my wife, accusing her of abusing the bunk bed. When I spoke to him about it, he was not apologetic and was even more rude to me. He refused to provide the labor (which is clearly stated on the back of our receipt, "M. Simon stands behind it's warranty for 1-year materials and labor." When I reminded me I had also bought a $4000 living room suite, he rudely replied "THANK YOU!" and kept rudely talking fast over me.
I ended up having to cut slats to fit the full size bed, and repair it myself.
The bed is cheaply made with extremely soft wood. The screws were too short to hold the ledge on, and driven deep into the wood in order to try to make it hold. "Joe" would not honor M. Simon's warranty, even though it was in writing. He never even inspected the bed. At the very least a BBB complaint is forthcoming.
It will be a snowy day when I buy from this guy again. I don't buy from liars and cheats.
Valuable Lesson – I bought a bed and matress and still waiting for this. It has been almost two months now. To me the salesman and management have already gotten their money and drop the ball. They don't care about the customer. When I call and ask for the salesman that I had and ask where and when am I going to get this? He will not return my calls.
