Opaque-dining in the dark

Taking you through a journey of taste, sound and touch, in the dark

  • Uniquely Splendid
  • Eye/Soul Opening
  • $99 for a 3 course dinner

Arriving in Southern California on the crest of the latest dining trend sweeping through Europe, based on an ingenious European concept that has enjoyed great popularity in cities like Berlin, Paris and Vienna the first ever Dining in the Dark experience is now available in Los Angeles.

Just imagine that you can not see for an hour or two, that you are abandoning vision in exchange for a new, multi-sensual dining experience. Opaque is enhancing our senses of taste, smell, touch and hearing by abandoning one that we often take for granted? This is "Dining in the Dark."

Brought to you by Opaque, the dining in the dark experience allows you to willingly plunge into a world of sensitivity you have never experienced before, taking you through a journey of taste, sound and touch, all in the dark.

Editorial Review for Opaque-dining in the dark – by Christina Thornell

In Short
Upstairs from the Hyatt's lobby, a lounge area is the staging space for patrons to place drink and food orders before visually impaired servers direct them into darkness. Right hands are placed on the shoulder of the leader; left hands trail along black-curtained, maze-like table spaces. As compensation for vision loss dissipates, smell and taste take over. A three-course New American-influenced meal commences with a salad, then into diners' choice of fish, chicken or vegetarian entree, followed by dessert.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I just went last Friday and it was such an amazing experience. It was a bit scary at first being in pitch darkness, but you hear voices around you so you know you're not alone and you really learn to use your sense of touch. I was holding hands with my date most of the night. The food was pretty decent and the portions were big, I couldn't even finish all of it. I loved the game of guessing different objects in a bag just by feeling the objects. And our waiter Michael was wonderful, he even serenaded us at the end of the meal.

Concept was great but it was definitely not worth the money! I've had much better tasting food and more filling at Lawry's or Morton's. The portions at Opaque were small and the taste was horrible.

Pros: Great Concept

Cons: Bad food, ridiculous pricing
