Rip-off. I have to agree with the previous reviewer. Very shady billing practices indeed. I learned my lesson once from them and will certainly not be back. I live in a major U.S. city and travel the world, and I must say drinks at this place are priced on par with the world's finest cities. Too bad this place most certainly is not. If you want expensive drinks in plastic cups go right ahead.
The Bartender's Always Right.
I have been to Play many times and never really had a problem until last Wednesday night. The bartender let a random person put drinks on my tab that he assumed was with me. When my tab was $70 instead of like $30, I disputed the charges. Oscar, the manager, told me ?Our bartenders don?t make mistakes.? And ?Next time, you?ll need to be at the bar to authorize the drinks?. So basically, he made it out to be my mistake that Leonard, the bartender, put someone else?s drinks on my tab. One individual in my party was overserved and I had to get them home, so I signed the receipt and left. I got Joe Brown?s (owner) phone number and decided I would get it cleared up the next day.
Joe Brown said ?Well, I asked the bartender and he says he didn?t do anything wrong so there?s nothing I can do?. He also couldn?t provide me with an itemized ticket which means, I was overcharged regardless. Joe advised me to dispute the charges with my bank and I will. But I wanted everyone to know to watch out for these bartenders. Apparently, they have been advised to overserve you and fraud you as well. I have a feeling it works all too often.
Great alternative club in Nashville. Play was the first club I had ever been to in my life, and it was amazing. Being gay of course in Nashville is very hard...very conservative area of the country with the bible belt and homo-hating rednecks...but play is like an oasis in the desert. The drag shows are the best I've ever seen. The music is good house, trance and techno. Don't expect to hear a lot of top 40 while you are there, but maybe some popular song remixed to a techno beat. Clean and cool inside, Saturday nights are the most crowded but even then there's plenty of room to dance and move around comfortably. Modern decor with good lights and fog in the dance bar. It is a solid mixture of straights and gay men (and some women), but don't be surprised to find gay-oriented events every week. Bartenders are super-friendly, and good at what they do. I go to college in Massachusetts now, right outside of Boston, and I haven't been able to find a place quite like Play. So if you're in Nashville, or you live there and are tired of the usual, check it out.
So much fun!. I went to Play for the first time last Saturday, and I had a blast. The drag show was surprisingly excellent, and I don't even like drag! I was happy to see a mixed homo/hetero crowd, from 18-year-olds up to older guys and gals. The atmosphere is very cool with a spacious dance floor and several bars. The bartenders were very friendly, as well. I was there from 11 till closing at 3, and I wasn't bored ONCE! It is really a fun place for anyone.
WOW!. Well, I'm not sure when these people that left those NASTY reviews went to PLAY, but when I went a couple of weeks ago I had the BEST time of my life!!!! A bar from the 1970's?? Well, ummm....hardly....PLAY is one of the BEST bars in Nashville for a number of reasons...actually, I think it tops out with one of the BEST bars I have ever been to...from the friendly and HOTT bartenders, to the outstanding drag show, to the energetic atmosphere...oh, and did I mention the HOT bartenders :) ...PLAY is one of the HOTTEST BARS of 2007 in my opinion...To be honest, you would be CRAZY to not stop by and check it out when you are in NASHVILLE...I guarentee you will want to go back for MORE...and for those who choose to bash it...well, I'm guessing you are just JEALOUS that no one paid you any attention there! :)
Another Gay Dance Glub...the movie (8mm). Play is the place if you're hot for drag queens and twinks with a sprinkling of Vandy girls, and the occasional straight dude hoping to get lucky or out for some free drinks. Someone said here that Play has a "private balcony overlooking the dance floor." Dude, that's not a private balcony, it's a raised area with a bar.
Yawn.. Another cruisy gay bar, straight out of the 1970's. Drag queens lip synch, pretty shirtless boys dance, lonely old men watch in despair. Finally, Nashville has caught up with New York City, circa 1978. Wake me up when it's over.
User review by heavens2sin. Overall I suppose it was a cool place. However, their bartender(s) suck. When I questioned him on why I was being charged $25.00 for two shots of tequila- dude got pissed. Snatched up the drinks and told me that he wasn't going to serve us anylonger. It took a really nice guy (a friend of another bartender) to explain that dude was going to charge me $10.00 bucks a drink-b/c he can and the extra $5.00 was b/c he was having to take the time to run my credit card. Suck boy... was mad b/c I questioned his actions-and also b/c someone was taking the time to explain. He actually threatened to call the police b/c I was wanting to know why I was being charged this ungodly amount for two shots. I won't recommend it to any of my gay/lesbian friends. Word of mouth is the best advertisment.
