For the money the hands-down best restaurant in Lawrence – The beer is among the best you will find in the region (if not the country!). The food is both affordable and suprisingly good! It is true that the dining room can be loud (few sound absorbing surfaces), but not so bad as to deter you from bringing your whole family to a late lunch or early dinner (I would, however, advise you to try and beat the drinking crowd as the noise level increases substantially with their arrival!). Overall, Freestate is easily among my top three fav restaurants in Lawrence (for point of reference: I have eaten at nearly every restaurant in town). And don't forget the Monday drink special! Two varieties of their microbrews go on special each Monday for less than two Washingtons per pint!!! ~8D
Oh, and if you make an advance reservation for a large group, you can ask about using the rear seating area as a semi-private dining room (i.e. MUCH MUCH quieter for group dining!).
Good beer, not much else. – I read the previous reviews before posting this one. I should have realized when people are boasting about a "cheesy pasta dish" a.k.a. macaroni and cheese and "fish and chips" fried fish parts, I should not have expected much. The beer is exceptional but the food is a notch above Applebee's in quality. Bartenders attitudes were bad. I don't know why they acted so snobby, your a bartender in Kansas, lose the attitude.
A Mass Street Institution – Free State is a great place to go with your buddies for a beer or a casual meal. The main dining room is loud and can get crowded at peak hours - expect a wait on weekends. Probably best known for their microbrews, although the food is very good, too.
Primo Pasta – I came here for the beer, but I've gotta go back for the pasta. They serve up a homemade penne with wild mushrooms in a cheesy sauce that is about as good as food can get. The beer is good too, and it is really filling, so make sure you leave room for some noodles or fresh bread. The room is loud, but the crowd is nice, you can always make a friend if you didn't come with one.
Music – We liked both food and beer. The problem is that the music was a little bit too loud. It´s not a great place to have a meal with your family, for example.
The Kind Brewery – Free State is exceptional... everything about it is fantastic! The food is wonderful, especially the fish and chips. Try a nice Ad Astra or Oatmeal Stout during, or to finish off your dinner! The brews are of great quality and great selection.
